EPISODE 4 : When it Rains, it Pours
-----------------------------------
:Oh it's alright,: Tyger called back as he padded down the hall,
:She's sound asleep.:
**********
Jubilee tried to become one with the wall, as the tiger strolled
past her, and wished she was a telepath. She hadn't realized how hard
it was to eavesdrop on people when only one of them was talking.
:I'm not gonna learn anything like this,: She thought. :and I've
_got_ to find out what that kid is up to.: Jubilee frowned, :Well,
maybe not kid, after all I'm almost sixteen and they still treat me
like I'm twelve.: She thought evil thoughts about the other X-men, but
only for a moment. :I 'spose when your going on ancient it's hard to
remember how old everyone else is.: She relented, and watched the tiger
stroll down the hallway
Jubilee had managed to find a vantage point safely above
eye-level, even for the tiger. Plus, she could see half-way down the
hall in both directions. Now if she could only _hear_ something.
**********
Tyger padded down the hall, all of his attention focused on
keeping an eye on Logan, who was quietly shadowing him, and on
following Xavier's faint scent trail.
:I wonder if even Sasha can help me now.: He grumbled to
himself, :I don't trust these people, and if they find out...: Tyger
shook his head sadly. :We all walk the paths that we are given.
Gods grant them the wisdom to see that truth.:
Tyger was so distracted by the combination of trailing, watching,
and musing, that he failed to notice Jubilee, and was woefully
unprepared for Jsssp's untimely arrival.
**********
Elsewhere in the world, in the midst of a unpopulated mountain
range, a storm raged, lightning cascading down the sky. An empty cliff
edge was taking the brunt of the storm, the rocks that formed it
glowing and melting as strike after lightning strike hit the battered
ground. Then finally, in a crescendo of thunder and lightning the storm
made its final strike, and the sky cleared.
Standing on what seconds before had been molten stone, a midnight
black stag posed. Its pale blue eyes flashed angrily, and the
rain-washed sunlight echoed off its ivory horns. It flung its head up
to test the wind, and it slowly turned to face the West and, half-way
across the globe, the X-men's mansion.
::Mngr. Gnnrm, grsmn.:: It stated, resolutely.
**********
Tyger felt the world fall out from under him, as he fought to
hold onto the form he had been given. He crouched in the hallway, tail
lashing, and gleaming fangs brandished in a soundless roar. He had not
expected the Knlir to find them so soon.
:Kendor soln, kendar kototh,: he chanted silently to himself,
:kendor soln, kendar kototh.: Slowly the after-affects wore off and
Tyger straightened. He glanced back over his shoulder to where
Wolverine crouched, frozen. Tyger sighed. :Thank Gods, at least that
kicked in.: He quickly released the mindblock, and Logan slowly
returned to reality, the past few seconds simply 'missing' from his
mind. Tyger turned and loped towards Xavier's office. :Sasha will
have my head over this one.: He lamented silently as he ran.
**********
Jubilee was very very still until the tiger has gotten far out of
sight. She watched as Logan crept out of the shadows to follow Tyger,
and shivered. :I gotta warn Prof!: She thought in near hysterical
calmness. :He's a dead man walking!: She giggled as she scrambled down
from her post. :Or a dead man sitting: she amended, her mind trying
desperately to steer itself away from what she had seen, but the scene
played itself out like a broken record.
Tyger had frozen, snarling, as another form had attempted to fuse
itself around him. His shape twisting and stretching, into something so
foreign Jubilee couldn't find the words, or thoughts to describe it.
Then the thing had faded, and Tyger had done something to Wolvie, who
didn't even seem to have noticed! And now the thing was headed
straight for the Prof! :X-men never have bad days,: Jubilee grumbled
as she headed down a side corridor to catch up, :_God_ has bad days,
and takes them out on us.:
**********
Beast stuck his head into Xavier's office, and knocked politely,
yet pointlessly. It's was hard to sneak up on a telepath.
"What is it Hank?" Xavier asked, turning from the computer to
greet the new arrival. Beast waved the note covered paper excitedly.
"I have discovered something amazing!" He replied, "Something
quite extraordinary about our fine feline friend." Xavier raised an
eyebrow in an unprompted Spock imitation.
"Fascinating."
**********
"Um.. Rogue?" Rogue looked down from counting the ceiling tiles,
and the chair thumped down from two legs, to four.
"You're awake!" Rogue commented intelligently. Daniel looked at
her for a moment, leaning against the wall and fighting off sleep.
"Barely." She finally replied. "But I heard Tyger..." She trailed
off, as she tried to remember. A tiny voice in the back of her mind
nagged at her to go back to sleep. She shook her head angrily.
"Something... happened to Tyger, it woke me up." The tiny voice got
louder. "Where is he?" she managed to ask just before the tiny voice
took over, and she slid down the wall, sound asleep.
Rogue caught Daniel before the girl hit the floor. She carried
her back into the medlab, and put Daniel her onto the bed.
"You're sure are heavy fer a hologram." She commented to the
sleeping teen. "'Ah don' know. Maybe he's right, 'ah just don' know.."
**********
Jubilee stuck her head in Beast's lab. :Dammit, where's backup
when you _need_ it?: She thought as she realized the be-furred
scientist was elsewhere. :That leaves Cyc or Storm,: She frowned, as
she headed back out the door. :and neither one's on the way...Murphy's
a dead man.:
**********
"Can you see Professor? I've worked it out a dozen times and still
come to the same conclusion. The cat cannot possibly be a creation of
Daniel's mind. Not unless you think she is capable of such delicate
work..." Beast looked at Xavier questioningly.
"No. I believe you are indeed correct Hank," Xavier replied, "it
seems our original problem has magnified a thousand fold." He looked
over at the door. "And it appears to be heading our way."
Tyger jog-trotted into the room, coming to a stop facing Beast
and Xavier.
::I've missed something haven't I.:: He noted.
"It doesn't seem to be as much what _you_ missed, as what _we_
are missing." Beast responded.
"And why we are missing it." added Xavier.
::Oh.:: Tyger blinked. ::That was for your own safety.:: Xavier
frowned.
"I do not see how mind-wiping someone could be seen as a
positive thing." Tyger winced.
::It's not a mind-wipe its a mind-block, and I seriously doubt
you would be happier, or healthier if I removed them.::
"Still, that choice should belong to us, not you."
::I should make you take them out yourself,:: Tyger replied
unhappily, ::but that would just be vindictive.:: The great cat
closed its eyes and concentrated. The blue aura flared into being,
and then faded out as Tyger looked up. ::Happy?:: Hank looked
smug.
"I was right!" he said triumphantly. "It _was_ an illusion, among
other things.." He paused. "Speaking of which, do you require medical
attention?"
"Medical attention?" The three turned at Jubilee's outraged tone.
"You're gonna _help_ it??"
**********
"'Ah wish Remy was here." sighed Rogue. She gazed silently at
Daniel's sleeping form.
"'Dat so chere?" she was answered, as a figure stepped into the
room. "'An here I thought I'd been gon' so long you'd forgot me."
He smiled "Guess I been wrong, no?"
**********
"Um.. Jubilee, is there a problem?" Xavier asked calmly.
"Yeah there's a problem! First it appears out of nowhere, then it
attacks Wolvie, and now it just tried to turn into something from a
Z-rated horror movie, and you ask if there's a problem?!" Tyger's
eyes narrowed, and a soft rumble-snarl worked its way out of his
clenched teeth. Jubilee ignored the tiger. "If you aren't willing to
deal with it _I_ am!"
Sparklies appeared for the second time that day, but these were
no playful sparklies, these were `sub-molecular-explosion-death-in-the-
making' sparklies.
"Not again." Beast sighed.
"Look," began Xavier, "I'm sure we can all work something out,
without needing to resort to violence...", but he was duly ignored.
:You do not understand..: Tyger started to say, but Jubilee cut
him off.
"What the hell are you?" She demanded, "I mean, first your just
a figment of Daniel's 'magination, now you're some shapeshifting
alien with seizures!" Tyger glared at her, and then deliberately
dropped his battle stance.
::I am a Kendass.:: He rumbled. ::And I _will_ do what I
deem is best for my Chosen.::
**********
"How'd you get in shugar?" Rogue asked worriedly, "This ain't
'xactly Fort Knox, but..." Remy smiled smugly.
"'Der ain't no system 'dat could keep me out, chere. You know
dat. An' wi' such a one inside..." They were silent for a few
moments, and then Remy turned to look at Daniel.
"An' who be the kid, chere?" Rogue sighed.
"You better sit down, s'long story..." Remy snagged a chair from
nearby, and Rogue began to relate the day's events...
**********
"Your chosen what?" retorted Jubilee, "Snack food? Religious
faction? Sorry to break it to ya' but its been done already."
::My Chosen is...my Chosen.:: Tyger replied, as what little
hope he had clung too escaped. :Sasha will never forgive me.: He
lamented silently :Gods, do not let them ask, if ever I did you any
service, do not let them ask...: His thoughts were interrupted, this
time by Xavier.
"Just what is a Kendass, Tyger?"
:And so another reality dies.: Tyger sighed and began to answer
the question...
::The Kendass are the Guardians of the Path of the Gods...::
**********
Daniel climbed out of a sound sleep, to the sound of people
talking. People with accents. She open one eye. Rogue was leaning up
against an empty bed talking to someone in a chair. Daniel opened the
other eye. The stranger was wearing a trenchcoat, with a mop of
reddish-brown hair falling over his red eyes.
:Red eyes?: Daniel decided now was a good time to wake up, a
_very_ good time. She struggled to sit up, which brought the previous
conversation to a halt. As the stranger moved closer to the bed, she
suddenly realized who it was. :Like the accent wasn't a hint: she
snapped at herself, :I can't be _that_ out of it...:
"You gonna stay awake this time?" Rogue asked gently. Daniel
blinked, and then nodded. Rogue glanced back at Remy "This's my
friend shugar, he ain't gonna hurt you." Daniel re-focused on the
trenchcoated figure.
"Gambit?" She asked sleepily. Remy looked at Rogue, and then
back at Daniel and shook his head.
"Sorry petite, I t'ink you got me confused wi'd somebody else."
