On the day Hibari Kyouya appeared in the Cavallone estate at his own volition, the Famiglia knew that something had changed-and possibly not toward the better.
It wasn’t so much the fact that he was a man as his ill repute to be the most selfish man in the world. Although the first did cause a degree of concern, it was the latter which had the top tiers of the Family whispering in louder, more fervent voices than usual. They loved their boss and it was their duty to protect him as he protected them. And not there was danger, there, under his nose, threatening every chance of future happiness he still had.
Naturally, they must act. As soon as possible.

Hibari Kyouya might not be the most eloquent of men, but he was in no way imperceptive. One could not rule a school, let alone a whole city, without an acute sense of perception. To survive, information was essential; he simply chose a select few-if any-entitled to his attention at the moment and shelved the rest.
The Cavallone Family, with the exception of Dino and Romario, had never quite roused his notice, even less interest. He rarely visited Italy, and aside from a spar every now and then with the head of the Family, he had very little to do with them. Even so, the moment he stepped out of the taxi and into the gate which guarded the Family’s mansion, he could tell that something was off.
It might or might not have something to do with the woman standing in front of him, blocking his way.
“You,” the woman stated, “are not worthy of him.”
Hibari was singularly unimpressed. He recognised her as one of the Cavallone Caporegimes, reputed to be among the most notorious killers in the underworld. But title or body counts alone did not make the man-or woman. In any case, for her to accost him in this manner already proved that she was less than smart.
Ignoring a growing itch of irritation, Hibari paid her no heed and resumed his walk to the mansion. He was barely two steps past her when she moved, not a sound but the faintest rustle of her silk suit. She was fast and he only had enough time to sidestep her attack and seize her wrist in an iron grip. The tip of her stiletto stopped centimetres away from his jugular.
Her smirk gleamed under the Italian sun. “At least you’re fast enough.”

The woman, as it turned out, was only the first.
One of very few things he found agreeable about the Cavallone Mansion was the size of the estate. A fiercely private person, Hibari understood the value of space, and this place had space, in abundance. That he had to waste at least five minutes to walk from the front gate to the mansion, however, was not at all favourable today.
That was when he encountered a portly man who looked vaguely familiar, shooting at the sky.
Did he want to try, the man offered gruffly as Hibari passed by. Shooting at birds was quite the sport and it was always good to practise one’s aim. He then proceeded to demonstrate, oblivious-or uncaring-of the Cloud Guardian’s disinterest, and made three quick, consecutive shots. Three birds fell to the grass, one of them still frantically flapping its uninjured wing, and Hibari was close to punching the man in the face.
A good practice, he reiterated, his eyes never leaving Hibari’s face. A very handy skill should there be a death that needed to look like an accident.
Hibari began to see what this was all about.

Dino was not at home.
This alone would have been enough to make Hibari throw a temper tantrum-beating the avian killer outside hardly sapped any of his irritation-but then a middle-aged man with silver hair appeared and his day was suddenly ten times worse. He did not like the Cavallone Consigliere. The man struck him as wily and cunning, and while those attributes might be indispensable for an advisor of a Mafia Family, he found them detestable in someone who might have been a proper carnivore, with proper skill instead of mind tricks.
“Is there anything I can help you with?” the Consigliere asked, his calm, measured voice somehow at odds next to his smile.
Hibari frowned, already halfway toward the front door. “No.”
“Information is hard to come by these days,” the older man said calmly. His smooth timbre made a sharp contrast to Hibari’s own less-than-polished Italian; maybe it was what deepened his frown. “Perhaps I can answer your questions before-”
“I don’t need your help,” he cut the offer before it could rile him. Except maybe it already had, because the older man was smiling his quiet, tolerant smile that made Hibari’s fingers twitch.
“Well, I suppose Boss knows better how to conduct a transaction with you.”
That was when Hibari raised his right fist and hit him.

By the time Dino came home, he was a step away from crushing skulls and sending every living matter in the vicinity to the bottom of the ocean. Even Romario had neatly retreated after a rebuffed offer of some tea and refreshment. The rest were content to leave him alone to pace on the back porch and glare at the trees.
Dino was a force of nature in himself. He swept a glance at the damage done to his men and property, and then approached him with not even a whip ready in hand. Hibari had just decided that he felt insulted when Dino engulfed him in a tight hug-which only loosened after a punch to the stomach.
“The next time your men dare to assume anything about me again,” the Cloud Guardian said in a low, threatening voice, “you’ll be dead.”
Doubling over with pain, Dino looked up at him, suddenly all wide eyes and faux innocence. “But you convinced them, didn’t you?”
Hibari hit him again.
