I'm watching 60 Minutes and it's all about how gambling is evil and the people who put up casinos and allow casinos are evil and how casinos should be stopped.
Look it. Check it out. I have a mind. I can think with that mind. I, as a basically non-idiotic person, know that if I go somewhere and they say 'put your money here and you might lose it altogether or you might win three times that amount' that I might, ya know, LOSE IT.
Are politics and politicians backwards? Yes. Are they greedy? Yes. Are casinos stacked in favor of the house? Yes. Do the casinos "prey" on you? Yes. Does every John Q. Public know this already going in if they have half a brain on them? YES.
People gamble because they want that thrill. That damn the man, I got one over on you thrill. As a member of a family full of card players (for chips generally not money) I learned at a very young age that you don't put down more than you can afford to lose. The rule of gambling is expect to lose it, hope to win it. That's the only safe way to gamble. Also don't bring in more money than it won't hurt you to lose.
If people want to gamble their life away and be stupid about it, why shouldn't they be allowed to do so? I say, there's no reason to make a law that says people aren't allowed to be stupid. I don't know, but it really gets up in my goard when laws are passed for protection against myself. That really pisses me off. I have the same problem with adult seatbelt laws.... who am I hurting but myself? I have the same problem about the fact that pot is illegal, I think it should have the same exact laws of beer: do it to yourself all you want, but don't endanger other people by getting behind the wheel. Age laws I agree with, outright banning I do not.
Like those groups that wanted to ban the Harry Potter books because they thought it was influencing their kids to become sorcerers or some such bullshit. That's not the book doing that, honey, that's bad parenting. The book is only making your failure as a parent obvious.
It just pisses me off. It's insulting to my intelligence or something, I don't know. Like, I don't want you to tell me I can't gamble and be stupid, I can tell myself that perfectly well, thanks.
