meta: on comparing fanfiction to "real writing"

Aug 20, 2005 03:48

I was talking to a friend of mine and I pointed out what I thought to be a particularly well-crafted and beautiful sentence, and while she did say it was well-crafted, her immediate response was that it was "awfully pretentious for a fanfic." I'm going to leave her anonymous, because I don't want her to be throttled by the fanfic writers out there ( Read more... )

I'm a WRITER. It's what I DO. I write. I'm so attached to my writing that if I can't write, sometimes I will cry. It defines me. It's not just something I do on occasion; it's not just this thing I have a knack for. It's this thing I have to do, because I would go insane if I couldn't. It's my catharsis. It's my therapy. It's what helps me sort out in my ever jumbled mind what I really think.

I understand you. I feel the very same way. Writing is breathing. Writing is living. If I am ever denied a pen and a paper (or my computer), I would go insane. Writing saved me in many ways.

I love words. I love reading them, using them, hearing trhem. I love archaic words, old, no more used words. I am linguistics major. Words, language are my profession. My life-style. My everything.

I believe that fanfiction is just one of the genres of writing, so it must ne as stylistically beautiful and crafted as other "real" fiction.

I liked your post. I like the way you write. I am happy that there are people like you in my flist, because you care about how you write. I hope that one day your works would be published. :) It is my dream too, but I know it is impossible, because I never write in my native tongue. Never did and never would. Which makes the dream of getting published within this country impossible.

Thank you for your post.

Mine is almost more of a word fetish. Give me a man that can use words that are so obscure and beautiful that I have to look them up to know what they mean, and they will own my heart forever. Hence, my great love for Dennis Miller. LOL.

True, yes. Good way to put that. Just another genre. Neither better nor worse. Very good way to put it.

I'm glad you liked my rant, it could have come off as quite pretentious. LOL.. To some I think it did. Especially the OMG and XD part. But oh well.

Thanks for replying!
