In my job, I get to deal with people who have some pretty ugly personalities on a regular basis.

I've come to understand and expect this.

The other day I ran into a new form of this that made me beg for the paranoid lunatics ranting about how I, personally, have rigged the game against them.

Virulent shit-talkers.

Two people I had never seen before were sitting at a table with a regular player. The regular player is a nice enough guy who maybe enjoys the sound of his own voice a little too much. After about my third hand he leaves, and the two people I'd never seen before immediately start working him over. Not just the standard, "He sure played bad" or "Where'd he get all that money to gamble with?" kind of comments either. Vicious and nasty things that I'd generally not say about my worst enemy.

The escalation went like this.

"I'm glad he's finally gone"

"He kinda creeped me out"

"I hope he's never my kid's teacher!"

"I kind of...worry about anyone that age who's never been married"

"I hope he isn't a soccer coach or anything"

"He seems like the kind of guy who would be a little too interested in the young girls..."

After all of this, and several other comments I'm not remembering well enough to quote at this time, they tried to engage me in banter.

It was all I could do to not tell them to shut up and lose their money so I could feel like they'd gotten their karmic reward.

So, now I have a new least favorite type of customer.

Good for me.
