Subject A.
Xion! You all know her, the not-really-fourteenth member of the Organization? Some call Sue, others call Good Character. Whatever. Let's take a look at her appearance, shall we?
She has short black hair, blue eyes, and the face of Kairi. Can you call this original? Who cares if it isn't a spectacular design. One cannot argue that Xion's design has certain details that make her recognizable as Xion. Her hairstyle, for example - the way it's cut, parted, clumped together. The fact that she is a black-haired Kairi is what makes her Xion! Her body frame is small; she wears the Organization's black coat with super-pointy shoes. If any of these details of her design weren't considered when producing fanart of her, it would be difficult to recognize her as Xion.
Case In Point

Subject B.
"Xion".
Yes, apparently this is "Xion" - the same not-really-fourteenth member of Organization XIII. She just has been dressed up by Kefka Palazzo, has one red eye, longer hair, a reversed bang part, and... going by the rest of the gallery, is loved by all main KH boys and hated by Naminé, who is jealous of the attention this "Xion" is receiving from Roxas.
Obvious personality rape aside...
Basically, this, children, is doing it wrong. You certainly have created a Sue, a vessel for your self-insert! Whatever caused you to conceive Xion in this way, I don't want to know, but maybe the Lisa Frank company is hiring people with a penchant for LSD SUPER KAWAII DESU color-splatter designs.
An alternate universe depiction can be however one chooses, but!
tl;dr: Characters have specific designs and personalities that make them distinct from one another. Alter either, and I might as well be looking at the latest vomit produced by Studio DEEN or some poor-production cheap anime studio. Or, of course, just your horrendous wish-fulfilling and eye-raping self-insert Sue called - and I quote - "Xi-chan".
