Do you think that people wouldn't be so quick to judge Xion and call her a "Sue" if she was a boy? (Of course in that case it'd be "Stu", but whatever)
I have very little information on the game. I can't say for a fact if she's a sue or not.
But I do know that I would be extremely judgmental regarding a pretty and sparkly extra Organization member with such influence on the game who came out of virtually nowhere, regardless of their gender.
I find it unfortunate how easily some members of fandom disregard the opinions of others through accusations of fandom misogyny. Yes, fandom can be harsher on female characters than male characters, but not every opinion about a female character is founded in that character's gender. Even if there is a pattern of shippers hating on a character who sinks their ship, not everyone who dislikes that character is a shipper, etc. I think a person is entitled to share their opinion on a character without someone jumping to conclusions about the source of that opinion, and trying to force that conclusion on the person sharing the opinion, or anyone else who might hold it.
Edit: It's another fandom and another character, but I feel a need to point out that it's not exactly unpopular to dislike the character of Genesis, from the FFVII compilation games. He's much the same situation as Xion - a character shoved somewhat crudely-seeming into a place already populated with previously existing characters, given powers that would be remarkable even among the previous characters, and fans are expected to similarly fawn all over this insert. I have to say - I've never been told I'm a bad fan, or even quick to judge when I expressed distrust of Genesis as a character. True, it's a different fandom and a different character, but I find it an interesting parallel that one opinion becomes suspect while the other is seen as acceptable and normal.
