So, you wanna write about the FF characters/put in FF characters who didn't appear in KH in your fic, right? That sounds dandy! But there are a few things to remember...

I'm especially tired of the way most writers just shanghai everyone's FF backgrounds into KH stories, because it doesn't work like that! As far as we can tell, KH is a straight-up alternate universe for the FF characters (evidence: people formerly the same age are no longer the same age and/or species). This means that the residents of Radiant Garden were born in Radiant Garden. They have different backstories, friends, and--to a degree--personalities.

And it's fun that way! Isn't inventing and playing with backstory way more fun than taking the previous backstory and shoving it in any-old-how? Isn't it more fun to twist FF places and things to fit than it is to insist on keeping them exactly the same? Isn't it more fun to find a new way to get the characters to the same place than to stick with the old, sense-non-making backstory? I think so, but then, I'm a backstory-whore. Apparently there are those who disagree.

Way to miss the entire point of an Alternate Universe, fanbrats.

I remember coming across a Yuna/Tidus fic set in KH. That's cute, but the only problem is, Yuna is a fairy in KH! Not going to work with a human boy. Nope.

Another thing that doesn't work with putting the original background for a FF character in the KH universe is that the original world is just not there. Midgar, Balamb, Spira, etc. have been replaced by Destiny Island, Traverse Town, Hollow Bastion, Twilight Town and such.

It's not exactly a coincidence that there are no FF characters in the Disney worlds, unless you count Auron, but I guess that all dead souls end up in the Underworld...

Oh dear, now I have an urge to write a fic with Vincent Valentine in the World that Never Was... (How COULD they ommit him!)

Auron is the FF character who is closest to his FF version, really, mostly because his backstory is implied and not directly said, and most of the hints do point to FFX canon.

I dunno, even KH!Auron seems to me to be at least a few reincarnations away from FFX!Auron (if only because, if there was ever someone headed directly for the Elysian Fields, FFX!Auron was that someone). I mean, he's *closer*, but it still doesn't quiiiiiiite fit in. Okay, so I always wanted FFX!Auron to get a happy eternity with his boyfriends Jecht and Braska, which KH!Auron's obviously not.

I am still waiting for the day when Quistis is set into KH as something other than the strict teacher, no matter how much it may fit her personality. ;.; Show some originality for Gods sake.

I hear that "Zidane in KH" bit loud and clear!! I put him, Zell and Locke as fishermen on the Destiny Islands for my pre-KH1 fic about the parents of the Destiny Trio XDDDd

But word, yo. YOu can't just plonk a character in without filling out their background.

Oh my word yes. In KH fics, KH canon is king! It's so much fun to play with, too - I mean, I don't object to bringing in little characterization elements from FF canon, like... hmm... I wouldn't fight you too hard if Setzer has his own gummi ship and a girlfriend named Daryl, for instance, and feel free to have Yuffie be a little sticky-fingered... but if she's got a hoard of Materia stashed in Ansem's lab, you're doing it wrong.

And it's so fun to mix things up! I want to bring in Rinoa as a teenager on Destiny Islands because I think she and Squall are much better characters when they're not forced by authorial fiat into being lovers for various reasons; and in my headcanon, Cyan and Lulu were teachers appointed by Ansem for swordplay and magic respectively. Leon and Cloud learned everything they know from Cyan, while Aerith studied with Lulu. (Yuffie learned everything from Edge in Traverse Town.)

It's fun! Come on, guys, with KH the sky's the limit. D:
