As for Sora... Sora's the one with the confidence, inspired by his friends, but he always gets to be the wimp in the relationship (why does there always have to be a wimp?) because he's shorter than Riku and therefore ZOMG HE'S THE UKE. Or something equally ridiculous.

I always thought that Sora was incredibly confident (not all the time, but he's charismatic, optimistic and pretty good at cheering others up) and Riku was somewhat insecure but appears incredibly confident (although I don't think that Riku fully realised that he was insecure until at least near the end of KH II, maybe earlier - as he said that he realised that he was actually jealous of Sora). So, in that sense, Sora and Riku are equal, so Sora doesn't just follow him like a hyper puppy.

Sora and Riku when it comes down to it are pretty much equals. I think if there was a follower in the group at all (I personally have no doubt Kairi can hold her own.) it would be Riku, who is like others have said more insecure, and lack the confidence and optimism that just leaks out of Sora.

And I think that's the issue in a nutshell. Fangirls do not want to write about equal partners in a mutual relationship, they want their OMGHAWT seme/uke dynamic. The thought of these characters they want to slash being friends and equals and rivals? Doesn't work with how they want percieve the characters as lovers.
