Look, people. Would you STOP writing the Riku-Sora dynamic as "Riku is the cool, calm collected leader, and Sora is the avid, hyperactive follower who hangs on his every word"? Did you miss the whole, oh, RIVALS element of their relationship? HELLO? Their friendship is mixed with a hearty competition -- that's why, to me at least, it's so ( Read more... )

I have no idea where people get that particular scenario and it bugs me. Riku as cool and confident, yes. He's arrogant and he knows it. But Sora doesn't hang off his every word. They are rivals and best friends and they do compete against each other.

Why must people play the game with their eyes closed?

I have absolutely no idea -_- Really, if it came down to it, Sora would be the one leading Riku... Like... you know... Sora leading Riku out of the darkness in canon? A less direct form of leading, but still.

What I don't get is where people seem to have gotten the impression that, internally, Riku's just as confident as he is outwardly. Um... did people entirely miss the ending of KH2? The part where he admits that he's been jealous of Sora all that time? He shows off because he's insecure. That doesn't mean he's a woobie or a wuss or anything, but he's not bursting with self-confidence, mmkay? Erk.

As for Sora... Sora's the one with the confidence, inspired by his friends, but he always gets to be the wimp in the relationship (why does there always have to be a wimp?) because he's shorter than Riku and therefore ZOMG HE'S THE UKE. Or something equally ridiculous.

In short: word.

Didn't you hear? All the short, cute, spikey haired ones in the relationship are the Ukes.

Yep, I think, if anything, Sora's the emotionally strong one. And Riku -- I think Riku has a lot of issues with... asking too many questions. He's a questioner/doubter, which translates into questioning/doubting himself.

Word.

I always thought that Sora was incredibly confident (not all the time, but he's charismatic, optimistic and pretty good at cheering others up) and Riku was somewhat insecure but appears incredibly confident (although I don't think that Riku fully realised that he was insecure until at least near the end of KH II, maybe earlier - as he said that he realised that he was actually jealous of Sora). So, in that sense, Sora and Riku are equal, so Sora doesn't just follow him like a hyper puppy.

*nods* I think that Sora is the one who really seems to trust himself, whereas Riku... yeah, he's pretty insecure. And gets his confidence more from outside himself than inside himself. Which is why he was so quick to see Sora as deserting him, and why that hurt him so much. Also why he gave into the darkness so readily, because, yay, something powerful to rely on.

WTF Whaaaaat?! Sora does not do that! Augh. The closest is when he has to get all the stuff for Kairi.

...Do these people play the game. I have no problem with Sora getting a bit hyper now and then,but..BLEH...It almost as bad as making Sora a Goth..

Sora and Riku when it comes down to it are pretty much equals. I think if there was a follower in the group at all (I personally have no doubt Kairi can hold her own.) it would be Riku, who is like others have said more insecure, and lack the confidence and optimism that just leaks out of Sora.

And I think that's the issue in a nutshell. Fangirls do not want to write about equal partners in a mutual relationship, they want their OMGHAWT seme/uke dynamic. The thought of these characters they want to slash being friends and equals and rivals? Doesn't work with how they want percieve the characters as lovers.
