he's a total wanker who does nothing productive and whines and cries all the time and thinks that everything is about MEMEMEMEMEME

Really? We must have played different games, then. The Tidus I know is probably their most rounded hero to date, the most dynamic and the most interesting. He has up times and down times, good traits and bad - he's impulsive, he doesn't think before he speaks, he likes to scream to relieve frustration, he's a good friend, he cares about others, and he tries for the entire last half of the game to find a way to save Yuna. A crier? He cries precisely once, after the semi-reconciliation just before he has to kill his own father. Selfish and unproductive? This is the guy who gives up his spot on the blitz team to Wakka, because it's Wakka's time, even though blitzball is his life and the one familiar thing about Spira. This is the guy who, knowing he will "die," continues on and saves the goddamn world. He holds his friends and a world he doesn't know far and above his own life, a life that would include Yuna. Yes, he's overconfident and cocky, and he does some really dumb things sometimes (such as the "announcement" before the tournament). But he's one guy up against a completely unfamiliar world, with problems he never dreamed he'd encounter, learning an entirely new vocation and then finding out he's taking this girl he's falling for to certain death and no one ever told him - and top that off with not really existing. He's got more on his plate than any guy I've seen Square/Squeenix come out with (and I readily admit I haven't seen/played everything they've done), and frankly it amazes me how he keeps going.

What you're repeating here is one fandom version of Tidus. There's also the "callous sexgod" version and "ADHD Ritalin-injected idiot" version, all of which need to be burned at the stake and the stake then sanctified to drive away the demons. Hate those versions of Tidus all you want. Kill them, destroy them, besmear and besmirch them. But if you're gonna hate the real character, hate them for the facts, not the fandom.
