This is not exactly a rant, but I figured that you guys, of all people, would have some good ideas.

For Advanced Composition class I'm writing a compare/contrast essay. My topic? Good!fic versus bad!fic.

If necessary, I can write this on my own, but I would love for your input on characteristics of good fics and bad fics. What makes them different ( Read more... )

The big thing is how it connects to canon. Goodfic ties into established canon with sentence, firmly rooted in what we already know of the characters. Badfic roams, disregarding canon, letting strong characters be weak and weak characters be strong. Goodfic will keep in mind the character's known past (I-VI worked for Ansem, Sora lived on Destiny Islands, Kairi used to live in Radiant Garden but doesn't remember... stuff like that). Badfic might or might not (maybe Kairi is reminiscing about Radiant Garden, maybe Ienzo is from Olympus Coliseum). Goodfic keeps in mind characters' past actions to predict future choices (in the past, Sora has done anything and everything for his friends; goodfic will have him caring about them). Badfic has characters acting in ways they wouldn't (Sora might disregard Riku and Kairi, become solitary, make fun of Donald's accent, etc).

Goodfic is also easy to read and interesting. You never really want to skip parts of it. You can understand each sentence the first time you read it. Badfic does not will make you look over sentences again this just like. Badfic is unlikely to interest the reader, and may drag on forever, going nowhere, doing nothing interesting, failing to maintain the reader's interest and not saying anything fresh or new or doing anything fun at all and it does get boring and may also include run-on sentences and it doesn't interest the reader at all.

Simple as it is, goodfic has correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. Bdafic may has pathitec speling adn teh punctuation may be off: singlaling to teh readre taht. maybe. it doesnt now what its takling abowt and alsou it's grammer are off.

Also, goodfic makes you care what happens next. In a goodfic, Sora might get trapped in Antiform and be unable to use his Keyblade. The tale will be crafted so that you wonder. Will Sora get out of Antiform? What happens to the Keyblade? In a badfic, however, Sora may go into Antiform and simply forget to revert. Donald and Goofy might not even notice. The reader won't care whether Sora gets out of Antiform or not.
