Don't you just hate it when people randomly stick things in parenthesis in the middle of a fic? I'm not talking about author notes either; those are a rant in and of themselves. I mean why use parenthesis when you could easily write it straight into the sentence or stick it in as an appositive? There doesn't even have to be any thought put into it -- just remove the () and add ,, as needed! It even bugs me in published novels 'cause half of the freakin' paragraph should not be in parenthesis! >:(
Also, if you want to put emphasis on a word/group of words/sentence/whatever, use italics. Please. Don't use CAPSLOCK OF RAGE (TM), don't use bold, don't underline, don't change the type size. And if you must use something other than italics, say *, /, -, or _, at the very least be consistent.
Note: The above rant/s only pertain to fics. Also, the second rant does not include the fics that have random words written funky. It bugs me, but it is, apparently, a style and I'll deal. ^^
