I am appallingly self-centered. I realize this.
I do not, however, engage in obnoxious fishing for compliments, and insist that I suck and am not worth caring about. That behavior is repugnant.
A: "You're a special person, you know that?"
B: "Oh, no, no I'm not. I don't deserve your love."
A: "What? Of COURSE you do!"
B: "No, I don't. I'm a horrible person."
A: "Well, if that's how you feel..."
B: "...hey. Hey wait. Get back here!"
