A Dilema

Last Wednesday I was on my way to work in my beautiful--near mint condition--2001 Mazda Protege MP3 (only 1500 ever made). I noticed a pedestrian waiting in the center lane for a chance to cross my lane. I checked my rear view mirrow and saw that the next car was about a block behind me; so, I decided to stop and let the pedestrian go. I ( Read more... )

I would try to play the "only 1500 made" card and keep talking to the mechanic and the insurance company to try and get the best deal, even though it's a hassle. Also, scan the web and local ads maybe for something you might like to switch to. If you find something or you don't, might help you make your decision. Just to have more concrete options than a vague idea of a new car would probably help add some contrast to the decision.

This happened to me a few years ago you know. Frame damage, given the option of repair or total. Of course, Suzaku's value is a bit under half your car's before repair. I chose repair because I like the car, wouldn't find anything I like as much at the same cost. It's worked out passably... but even though I haven't seen a performance hit, the value is essentially gone out of the car now.

I've actually already found a potential replacement. See, when I bought the MP3 I promised myself I would drive for five years (it has been a little over 3) then I'd get my BMW. So, in light of the crash, I've started tracking down potential BMW's and found one right away. 2001 330xi with 88,000 miles, it is in my price range (depending on any settlement money I get from the Insurance), my insurance will only go up about $30/month, but I can get my payments to less then I'm currently doing. With this in mind, I think I'm going to push to have the MP3 totaled...as much as I hate to and as much as I'll miss her.

I would push for them to label her totalled and get the most $$$ that you can. I am sorry to hear this...but at least everyone else was okay. Good luck!
