10. Twenty Million Sweethearts
In this movie, unscrupulous agent Pat O'Brien makes singing waiter Dick Powell a big radio star while Ginger Rogers, who has lost her own radio show, helps Powell. The movie is of sole interest not only to Powell and Rogers fans, but to those curious about the atmosphere of the world of radio broadcasting way back when. It's a nice little film, and is mildly entertaining.
9. Finishing School
I couldn't find a good picture, so please enjoy this screencap of the opening credits. This movie, about the trials and tribulations of several girls at a private finishing school, is a cute and fun movie but unfortunately the ending falls flat. Still enjoyable though.
8. Change of Heart
In this film, a group of college students who have just graduated go to New York to try to find work and make their way in the world. There's not much I can say about this film, since I haven't seen it in a while. If you look real close you'll see Shirley Temple in this film for about 2 seconds.
7. The Richest Girl in the World
A very charming and entertaining comedy, The Richest Girl in the World is about a "poor" rich girl, seeking true, "uninterested" love. This nice little movie has good pacing, likeable romance and some funny (not so screwballish)situations.
6. Twentieth Century
In this film, A flamboyant Broadway impresario (John Barrymore) who has fallen on hard times tries to get his former lover (Carole Lombard), now a Hollywood diva, to return and resurrect his failing career. Even though this movie is very over-acted, it is still very enjoyable and funny.
5. Bright Eyes
In this movie, an orphaned girl is taken in by a snobbish family at the insistence of their rich, crotchety uncle, even as her devoted aviator godfather fights for custody. This movie contains Shirley Temple's best known song "On The Good Ship Lollipop." It's worth watching for that reason alone, but even without that it's still a very delightful film.
4. The Thin Man
In this film, Nick and Nora Charles solve a murder case with their dog Asta. This film is the second pairing of William Powell and Myrna Loy, and it spawned a myriad of sequals. A classy and stylish film, and amusing to boot, The Thing Man is definitely a great film.
3. Manhattan Melodrama
This was the movie that John Dillinger saw right before he died. And I bet he liked it. Manhattan Melodrama, the first pairing of William Powell and Myrna Loy, is a very entertaining movie.
2. The Gay Divorcee
The second film that paired Fred Astaire with Ginger Rogers, is by no means their best, but it is very entertaining if you can ignore Edward Everett Horton's "Let's K-nock K-neez" number.
1. It Happened One Night
This was the first film to win all in all five of the major categories at the Academy Awards, and it totally deserved it. It Happened One Night arguably remains to this day unparalleled in screwball comedies. It is funny, charming, witty, and I absolutely love it.
