The Doctor quietly watched as the sky began to lighten over the parched landscape, gradually revealing the details the darkness had obscured. They’d been here for roughly four hours at this point, him and that strange girl he’d decided to travel with on a whim. As a thank you for her saving his life back on the prison planet run by the mysterious “Ken”. Because he was lonely.
Buffy lay next to him, finally asleep after he reassured her that he would wake her should anything happen. Whatever worries troubled her slipped from her face, leaving her looking young, younger than even Rose had been while traveling with him.
It was a mistake, he knew, to have her come with him, when all he did was bring ruin to those who traveled with him. Rose trapped in a parallel dimension with her family; Martha and her family forced to live through a year of hell that nobody remembered; and Donna... His hearts clenched at the thought of what he had to do to save his best friend. Traveling with him had brought nothing but misery to his companions. He’d been selfish, asking her to come with him, even if it was just for one trip.
A light rain began to fall, waking his companion instantly.
“Great, now my boots are going to get all mud-filled,” she complained good-naturedly, pushing herself up and brushing her hair out of her face. “Any response from her?” Buffy asked, gesturing with her chin at their other companion, the blonde woman who had screamed and collapsed at their feet after being chased by something. By what, he wasn’t sure.
“No idea,” he answered, going for manic curiosity to hide his worry. “I’m almost positive we’re in England, some time in the fortieth century, but something’s off. It shouldn’t look like this, for one.”
“Well, she had to come from somewhere, so why don’t we find out and get with the answers?” Buffy suggested.
“You’re catching on quick,” he told her, giving her a grin. Bending down, he gently lifted the unresponsive women into a bridal carry. “Allons-y!”
“French? Really?” Buffy muttered, following him as they traced the woman’s footsteps back to where she’d come from.
The Doctor smiled again, trying to hide his worry. Once this was over, he was taking her back, he decided, glancing over at her face as she took everything in. She was already carrying some sort of burden that had her hiding in Los Angeles, something that explained why she was stronger and faster than any human had a right to be in her particular century. He wasn’t going to add to that by having her travel with him.
He wouldn’t be that selfish to inflict this life on another young human just because he was lonely. He could live with much. He just didn’t know if he could live through that again.
