Jack Harkness knew he was in trouble the moment he felt the breath tickle his ear.
“Hello, lover,” a female voice he hadn’t heard in far too long whispered, full of promises and despair. Jack didn’t need to turn around to know who it belonged to.
“Hello, Helena,” he answered, taking a sip from the cup of coffee in front of him. “Long time, no see.”
“I could say the same thing about you, Jack,” she answered, sliding in to the chair next to his. She looked exactly how he remembered her, pale skin surrounded by dark hair, pained eyes studying him intently. Helena Wells wasn’t a woman anybody would forget easily and Jack was no exception.
“Somehow, I don’t think you’d look me up for nostalgia’s sake,” Jack told her bluntly, going straight to the point. The last he had heard, she had been bronzed and he didn’t see the Regents being the type of people to let somebody like her free, especially after what had happened to those two men in Paris.
“Is there something wrong with a woman wanting to reconnect with the only living tie to her past?” she asked, all offended innocence that Jack didn’t buy for a second. He didn’t respond, perfectly content to wait her out.
“You’re a long way from Cardiff,” she observed, finally breaking the silence between them. “I never saw you as a New York type of man, for all that you’re an American.”
“What can I say? I’m full of surprises,” Jack replied with a flirtatious inflection, flashing her a smile. “Just like you, if I remember correctly.” Helena smiled, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Yes, you could say that,” she agreed, playing with the locket around her neck. “You did always like that about me.”
“What are you planning Helena?” Jack asked, quickly becoming annoyed with the roundabout discussion. Helena was always one of those people who played the long game, always at least two step ahead of her opponents, Jack included once upon a time. He didn’t see any reason why over a hundred years difference in time would change anything.
“Who says I’m planning anything, Jack?”
“Because you’re you, Helena, and you always have a plan.” Jack stared at her, trying to see if there was anything on her face that might give her away. Just because they had been lovers didn’t mean Jack wasn’t aware of how dangerous Helena could be when she put her mind to it.
“It’s lovely that you think so highly of me,” Helena answered, getting to her feet. “It was good to see you again, Jack. Nice to know that the more things change, the more they remain the same.” She started to walk away, but stopped just short of the doorway and turned around to face Jack.
“Say hello to Gwen and her family for me,” she said, a taunting smile on her face before walking out the door. Jack surged to his feet and raced after her, but when he stepped outside, she was gone. He furtively scanned the street for any sign of her, but it was like she had vanished in to thin air.
Taking a ragged breath, Jack began walking. He didn’t know whether Helena’s last words had been benign or a warning. With her, it was always better to err on the side of caution.
