“Of all the places in the universe we had to hide, why in the bloody hell did the man have to choose Gotham City?” Martha muttered under her breath, walking home from a long shift at Gotham Mercy Hospital. She was working there for the duration of their stay in this city, and because she was new, was the one who drew the short straw in terms of shifts. The Doctor, or rather, John Smith, was now her roommate who worked at a local high school as a history teacher.

Shivering slightly in the chill air, she scanned her surroundings. Gotham was never safe, especially once darkness fell. Her apartment was only four blocks from the bus stop, but it was always tense and nerve-wracking for her. The police rarely patrolled in this area, and those that did were corrupt, from what her neighbors had told her.

Hearing footsteps behind her, Martha tightened her grip on the small bottle of pepper spray she kept in her jacket pocket and did her best to keep calm. Panicking would do her no good in a situation like this. She could hear the footsteps come closer and closer to her.

“Hey, sweetheart,” a slurred voice said behind her as a hand grabbed her arm, pulling her around to face her assailant. Martha, doing her best to keep calm, pulled out her spray and did her best to aim it at his eyes as she pressed the trigger.

“Fucking bitch!” the man yelled, doing the opposite of what Martha wanted and tightening his grip on her arm. “I’ll make you pay for that!”

“Let go of me!” Martha shouted, trying to wrench her arm out of his grip and stepping on his instep. His grip slackened, allowing Martha to yank her arm away from him, just as a dark shadow moved behind him.

“You heard the lady,” the shadow growled before punching the man in the face, knocking him out cold. Martha took a step backwards, away from the unconscious man and to get a better look at her savior.

“Are you serious?” The words came out of her mouth before she could stop them. Standing in front of her, half-hidden by the darkness, was a man dressed in some strange sort of body armor, complete with a cape and a mask that was reminiscent of a bat. “There’s actually Batman? God, I really shouldn’t be this surprised.” She’d always thought that Gotham’s mythical hero was just that: a myth. Guess she should have expected differently, given her experiences traveling with the Doctor.

“You shouldn’t be out so late,” the man told her after a moment’s pause. Martha raised her eyebrows at this remark.

“Couldn’t have figured that out on my own,” she replied somewhat sarcastically, unable to help herself. “Thanks for the advice.” Turning around, she quickly walked the remaining block and a half to her small apartment. It wasn’t until she was inside and had locked the door that what had just happened really hit her. Sitting down and shaking slightly, Martha did her best to contain a bout of hysterical laughter at the thought of a man crazy enough to go out dressed like a bat to save people like her.

“Just breathe, Martha, just breathe,” she reminded herself, holding her head in her hands and trying to control herself. The thought of her masked rescuer sent her into another bout of laughter.

Martha had the next day off, thank goodness, and spent the day sleeping and running various errands. The next day, she was lucky enough to have a day shift, which meant that it was easier for her to go check on the TARDIS during her lunch hour. Standing in the center of the TARDIS, watching the Doctor’s video for her, she felt the most relaxed she had in the last few days. The TARDIS was safe for her, where nobody could touch her. Far too soon, her free time ended, and she reluctantly stepped outside and quietly locked its bright blue door.

“Until next time, my friend,” she whispered, running her hand along the wood. With a sigh, Martha exited the storage unit where she was storing the TARDIS and began the short walk back to the hospital.

Sipping her mug of tea, Martha felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise. Resisting the urge to turn around to see who was watching her, she quickened her pace, so that she could get lost in the crowd a few steps ahead of her. Once she had reached the middle, she turned her head slightly, but couldn’t see anybody following her.

You’re just being paranoid, Martha, she told herself, as she stepped back into the hospital and smiling at the front desk attendant. Everything is fine.

“Master Bruce, what are you doing?” Alfred asked Bruce Wayne later that afternoon. The billionaire sat in front of the computer, staring at the screen. “Where did you get this?” Alfred asked, pointing at the picture in the center, surrounded by various news article, sketches, and photographs.

“In a storage unit, rented by a Doctor Martha Jones,” Bruce answered, leaning back in his chair and studying the bright blue police box.

“Any reason in particular you’re looking in to this?” Alfred asked Bruce, no inflection in his voice to let the younger man know what he was thinking.

“She didn’t react the way somebody normally does to being saved by Batman for the first time,” Bruce answered, typing in Martha’s name and bringing up her information. “And her file doesn’t make any sense after a cursory look,” Bruce continued, looking up at Alfred. “It’s as if she’s existing in two places in time at once, which is impossible unless she isn’t who she says she is.”

Alfred didn’t answer for a moment, still looking at the bright blue police box. “I think you best let this one lie, Master Bruce,” he finally said, looking down at his employer. “There are some things that are best left undisturbed.”

“What do you know about this, Alfred?” Bruce asked, his curiosity piqued. Alfred didn’t say anything, just turning around and walking towards the door. Before opening it, he turned back around to face Bruce.

“Like I said, Master Wayne, there are just some things that are best left undisturbed.” With that, he quietly exited the room, leaving Bruce alone. Wondering what exactly Alfred meant, Bruce turned his attention back to the screen before him.

“What are you hiding, Doctor Jones?” he muttered to himself, studying her picture. “And why is that blue box so important?”
