Annie Walker walked up to Joan Campbell’s office, wondering exactly what the older woman wanted. Annie had arrived at work this morning to find a message at her computer, telling her to meet Joan in her office immediately. Knocking on the door, she entered as soon as she heard Joan’s curt “come in.” She found the director sitting at her desk across from another woman whom Annie had never seen before.
“Annie, I’d like to introduce you to a new liaison who will be working with the DPD, Doctor Martha Jones” Joan told Annie. “Dr. Jones, this is Agent Annie Walker, your contact person.”
“Pleasure to meet you, Annie,” the shorter woman greeted her, giving Annie’s hand a firm shake.
“So, what agency are you from?” Annie asked sliding into the extra chair across from Joan. This was only the second time she had really worked with an agent from another organization, and she wasn’t sure she should really count Elliot, since he was a double agent and all that.
“Dr. Jones is from the Unified Intelligence Taskforce, or UNIT,” Joan explained. “She’ll be with us for the foreseeable future, going over reports that we’ve had problems verifying. Can you show her around? I have a meeting that I’m about to be late to.”
“No problem,” Annie answered, getting to her feet. “If you follow me, Dr. Jones.”
“Please, call me Martha,” the other woman answered with a slight laugh. “Dr. Jones makes me feel old, and I start looking around for somebody else whenever somebody calls me that.”
“I’ll make sure to remember that, Martha,” Annie said, holding the door open for her. Annie showed Martha around the floor of the DPD, going to Augie’s desk first.
“So, the mysterious UNIT finally makes an appearance,” Augie commented after Annie had introduced him to Martha. “Glad I could be around to see this.”
“We can’t always be aloof and mysterious if we want to actually get something done,” Martha replied, a hint of a smile in her voice.
“Annie, who’s your friend?” Jai’s voice asked from behind her. She turned around and gave the other man a smile.
“Jai, meet Dr. Martha Jones from UNIT,” she said. “Martha, this is Jai Wilcox.”
“If I had known that there were people like you at UNIT, I would have requested to be stationed there long ago,” Jai said, taking Martha’s hand and giving it a kiss. She gave Annie a sideways look before looking back at Jai with a raised eyebrow.
“I’m engaged,” she told him, carefully extracting her hand from his grip. “Although it is nice to meet you.” Annie bit back a laugh until they were on their way to the cafeteria. Martha asked about, and then listened politely to Annie’s story, and how a woman with a love of languages and cultures had found herself joining the CIA.
“What about you? How did a doctor get involved with UNIT?” Annie asked, poking at the remains of her salad.
“Well, there was this guy,” Martha began with a small, secretive smile. “Don’t laugh! It wasn’t like that. Well, maybe a little, but it was so, so much more. I traveled with him and saw things that defy imagination and logic, and had the most amazing time.
“But then, it was time for me to move on,” Martha added after a momentary pause. There was pain in her eyes, and Annie was sure that there was so much more to the story than what Martha was telling her. “I was a medical student when I left, and after I got my degree, UNIT gave me a call about this job. I’m pretty sure he gave them a call about hiring me, though. He’d do something like that.”
“Who is he?” Annie asked, genuinely curious. There was love, respect, sadness layered throughout Martha’s voice when she spoke of him, and she wondered who he could be to affect her in that way.
“The most impossible person you’ll ever meet,” Martha answered. “It’s hard to describe him to somebody who’s never met him. Although,” she continued, studying Annie for a long moment, “I think he would like you.”
The rest of her day was spent tracking down a lead for Joan, so by the time Annie had a moment to herself, Martha had already left to finish moving into her new apartment. Annie paused by her desk, wondering what exactly the other woman meant when she said “he would like you.” Who was he to Martha, exactly, and how did he have the ability to swing her a job in an agency like UNIT?
Turning these questions over in her head, Annie climbed into her red Jetta and drove home for the night.
