Summary: Preparing for yet another assignment, Harry realises just how badly he wants to get away from the office.
Author’s Notes: I blame the lack of sleep and the satellite radio station where I work for the Warren Zevon reference.
It was with great reluctance that Harry pulled himself away from his partner. Malfoy straightened his robes and nodded, Disapparating back to the office. Harry followed a moment later and took a moment to steady himself at his desk. Across a stack of paperwork, Malfoy met his eyes. Only the faintest glimmer of something shone there, gone as soon as Nuttcombe and her partner approached. "Better get in the briefing room, you two. Morgan's nearly ready to drag you two in there by your ears."
Harry followed Malfoy, who had fallen into line after the other two Aurors. After a stealthy glance around, he reached forward and rested his hand on the small of Malfoy's back, only to be batted away. With a look not unlike a child might make if denied dessert, Harry pulled his hand away and shoved his fists into his pockets. They had shared a few frenzied kisses, but he couldn't make one gesture of intimacy?
"Auror Potter. Auror Malfoy. Good of you to show," Morgan said as they entered the room. "Something got your knickers in a twist, Potter?"
Harry made an effort to appear neutral. "No sir. Just anxious to get back out into the field."
Morgan let out an amused snort. "You're about to get your wish, Potter. Your statements about the Selwyn case can wait, We have enough evidence to put him away for life as it is. While we were all out, there was a slight break in the Necroman-the circle ritual case. Some of the open missing persons cases seem to lead back to that circle you two found the other night. Nuttcombe and Robbins are going back to that scene to scour for a few more things. Mind the circle, you two. Our experts are still working out all of its properties, but they do know it's meant to kill you. Wouldn't take more than a minute at the best of times. Nasty business. Don't turn your backs on it. And for Merlin's sake, don't open any of those doors around the circle!"
Malfoy turned toward Harry slightly, and Harry caught the unhappy look on his face which plainly said that he did not want to think what might have happened if he had not pulled Harry out in time. Still a bit frustrated from being brushed off, Harry sighed. Malfoy had certainly saved his life. And Harry had saved his tonight. It seemed the cycle was still intact.
Harry listened to Morgan give out other assignments, waiting for their turn. Reese and Holbeck were directed to try to talk to the informant who was still in St Mungo's, in the off-chance they could convince him that Selwyn wouldn't be coming after him again. The Stratolli twins were given the task of dealing with a new werewolf who had been reported in Kent and Mayfair, but appeared to have settled somewhere in London. Harry did not envy them that task.
"Last two teams: sorry to say you four will be out a while. You're up for surveillance. Ashwin and Meyer, there's been talk of someone researching old rituals that require a sacrifice of a powerful wizard at one of the public archives. You'll head down there and see if you can spot anyone fitting the suspect's description. Potter and Malfoy,..well…brush up on your warming charms. It's going to be a very cold night. I'll give you details in a moment. Grab something to eat in the cafeteria. I'll meet you there shortly." He dismissed them all with a barked order and a wave of his hand, and Harry walked out of the room, Malfoy on his heels.
"What does he mean, it's going to be a very cold night?" Harry's partner muttered as they stepped into the empty lift. "Why do we always land these assignments? We haven't even done anything to be punished for this time. Unless…" Malfoy paused. "Potter? You don't suppose he knows about us?"
"Knows what about us, Malfoy? I don't even know about us. You brushed me off back there, not two minutes after the best snogging I've had in years, and-"
"Years?" Malfoy interrupted with a self-satisfied smile. "Really?"
"Not the point, Malfoy. Point is, one second we're pressed together and I'm so turned on I've forgotten my own name, and the next, you act like nothing's happened." Harry fixed Malfoy with a glare that said they were not getting off the lift until he had answers.
"Oh, that." Malfoy waved his hand dismissively. "I simply thought it prudent to maintain the illusion that nothing had changed while we're at work. Please don't take it personally, Potter. Merlin knows I thought about grabbing your arse as we walked out of that briefing."
Harry, prepared to counter Malfoy's argument, paused. "You did?" Why was it so hard to read his partner?
"Yes." Malfoy moved closer as the lift drew closer to the main floor. "Trust me, Potter. There is little else I would rather do than Apparate you straight back to my flat and let you have your way with me."
Harry's brain promptly short-circuited. He had been so focussed on things like keeping his partner safe and wondering why he was always so worried about him that he hadn't really had time to dwell on some of the more physical aspects of their potential relationship. "Oh?"
Malfoy slid even closer, his chest nearly pressed into Harry's. "Yes. You wouldn't believe the things I'd let you do to me." He tilted his face forward and pressed his mouth to the bit of skin exposed above Harry's collar. His hair brushed against Harry's jawbone, causing him to shiver.
"Careful, Malfoy, That tickles."
"You know, if we're to be spending the night in close quarters again, there's nothing that says we have to pretend nothing's happened…if, say, we're all alone."
Harry swallowed hard. "Shouldn't we perhaps focus? We've each nearly been killed this week."
Malfoy huffed, his hot breath causing Harry to break out into goosebumps. "Technicalities, Potter. But if you think it best, I'll play along. But when we're off duty, all bets are off."
The lift came to a gentle stop and a voice announced their arrival at the main level. Malfoy stepped casually away as the doors slid open, but Harry did not miss the slight flush on his partner's cheeks. He wondered what kind of assignment Morgan had in mind for them, and how long it might be until they were on their own time.
He hadn't wanted a day off this badly in a very long time.
