Attrition: When you repent your sins, but not because you love God.

You can regret something all you like, but regret is different from repentance.

We've all heard it before. Human beings are selfish creatures. Any action that appears to be altruistic is not so. Warm fuzzy feelings of righteousness and moral superiority are incentives for action as material reward. Ispo facto, if guilt is a punishment, then all repentence must be attrition.

I sound more and more like Nietzche every day.
