Yaki and Ano are on Konane, trying to recruit the Yutamaki and the Queen's army before invading Lauli.
“Do you think they’ll come?” Yaki asked when they finished eating. He winced and rubbed his shoulders.
Ano knew he was aching from the long swim earlier and moved behind him to rub his back. It had been years since he had done this in human form, but it had been years since Yaki had had to build muscle. “Of course some will,” Ano said as Yaki relaxed into his touch. “Some always do. And the Yutamaki have lost more than the other clans.”
“They also have more to lose.”
Ano found it hard to care what happened to the clan, but he could pretend for Yaki’s sake. He leaned forward and kissed Yaki’s shoulder. “They’ll come.”
Yaki did not react. Ano brushed his silver hair out of the way and kissed the nape of his neck. His hands traveled lightly down his partner’s back, touching now for the sake of touching rather than soothing. He kissed from the edge of his neck to the top of his shoulder, glad they had had a chance to bathe earlier and wash off the salt.
“You never initiate this,” Yaki said softly, still not moving.
“No?” He always did…
“Not with me.”
…in the Dragon School. Oh. And Yaki was well aware of how Ano had behaved with the women there. He could not let his partner think he was second best.
Ano pulled him back against him. Yaki lost his balance and tried to catch himself, but Ano caught his arm and took his weight against his chest. “Well, let’s change that, shall we?”
