About three years ago, I discovered things that, at the time, had only been questionable gossip (who tells family secrets and hypothetical scenarios when a pre-teen is listening to it? Lawd!) were true.
My dad’s fam is … a lot. Anyway, they’d mentioned that my grandmother had given up a baby (heavily hinted at female) for … reasons.

Ah, families. They can be pretty crazy. I have 13 uncles and aunts (seven uncles and six aunts) on my dad's side and one uncle, and six cousins on my mom's side. I have cousins I couldn't begin to account. Now that I have gotten older I am continuing to learn how absolutely weird both sides of my family tree were. It's all very confusing. These people we loved and who loved us are the same ones who left scars on our souls, some intentional, others not. "Who tells family secrets and hypothetical scenarios when a pre-teen is listening to it?" "Lawd!" Indeed. I heard way too much, as a child, too young to understand. Family. Ack! Who ARE these people?
Congratulations on your windfall aunt! It's good that you trusted your intuition and decided to write again. I hope she turns into a lot of nice opportunities and interesting connection for you. It's weird, after your parents are gone, isn't it. I know that feeling of having the reality of their absence sneak up on me. Every so often, I get a weird thought or feeling and stop to think: "My parents are dead." I mean, yeah, I know it...but it is like some child-part of ourselves needs to be reminded of the facts, because when we are children, our parents seem immortal.
