Prossy Kakooza sought asylum in the UK because of the violence she suffered in Uganda as a lesbian. She was publicly humiliated, raped and tortured by police, and in danger of being murdered by her own family. There are more details available on the site linked to above.. The UK Home Office has refused her asylum, saying that the attacks she suffered were the actions of individuals, and that she has no grounds to fear further violence if she moves to a different part of the country and ceases to be a lesbian (my interpretation; they maintain she's at no general risk, anyway). However, there is good reason to think that she would be at risk of further violence and of being murdered, if she is returned to Uganda. She is appealing, and the immigration tribunal meets to hear her case next Friday. If you would like to support her, there is an online petition you can sign, or you can write to Minister of State for Borders and Immigration Liam Byrne, who by the way has a good voting record on LGBT rights. Details of how to do this can be found on the page linked to above.
