Two long pieces in the Observer today about different men, which have made me really want to buy their auto/biographies:

Interview with Peter O'Toole

Article about Fidel Castro 'el abuelo de todo latinoamerica'.

'el abuelo de todo latinoamérica'?

High praise indeed. I've been reading a lot about the man recently. I don't think I'd go that far but he's certainly an enigmatic leader who will leave behind an incredible mark on the region world. I wonder how/how long Raúl will fare...

Unfortunately my Spanish isn't good enough to warrant La revolución de Evo Morales. I'll need to improve my language skills as he's a very interesting leader too. And Chavez. In fact, the whole region's fascinating. I'm really interested to see how they do over the next few decades.

Actually, I never described Castro that way - Evo did, at a rally I was at. I really want to read Castro's biography, now that I've read the text of the speech he gave at his trial 'history will absolve me'. It was bloody amazing, it reminded me of hearing Chavez speak - part poetry, part polemic. It made you want to shake your head and cry at all the past injustices but it also has a way of making you feel like you can - and have to - stand up and break the chains.

Ooooh, you were there, lucky lucky! I just read the quote.
Castro's biography's on preorder from Amazon. June I think it comes out.
Virtually the only other thing I could find in English by Castro are his memoirs of Che which arrived yesterday and I'm now making my way through, just to get a better feel for who he is and what he says he stands for, and to read up a bit about Che. It's interesting stuff.
