((Okay, just so you know, I have like, MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF HEADCANON for this prompt, but the only little bit that wanted to be written was this one, so have at!))

“You’re kidding me, right? You’ve got to be kidding me!”

Roxas slammed his hands against the wall, feeling the sizzle and crack of energy searing his hands. With a sigh, he stepped back to level a glare at the inevitably nearby Reaper, standing innocuously in the unseeing crowd. He yelled, “This is all your fault!”

He heard a sigh behind him and he tensed. “Really, Roxas, blaming the Reapers again? That’s just unfair.”

“I don’t care, damn it!” Roxas whirled around. Fists clenched, he stared down the red-haired annoyance that was his (he shuddered) partner in this sick, twisted Game. Axel only shrugged slightly, Player Pin glinting in the Shibuya sunlight.

“Never said it was, Roxy. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll go talk to him so we can get past this wall, agreed?” Taking Roxas’s sullen silence as agreement, Axel grinned quickly and moved through the crowd with a lean grace. Snorting, Roxas tapped his Pin to scan the crowd, checking the Noise around them. Wouldn’t do to be caught off guard.

“Roxas, look out!”

Roxas whipped around just in time to see a wolf Noise be swallowed up in flames, Axel hovering a half-fot off the ground as his pin was activated. Roxas touched the pair of pins that housed his weapons and spun around to check for more, but none showed up on the street.

“Christ, Rox, pay more attention will you?” Axel dragged a hand through his hair as he jogged up. Roxas was breathing hard, staring wildly at the space where the wolf’s maw had just been. He felt a hand shake his shoulder and he blinked, shook himself, looked up at Axel’s worried eyes. “You okay there, Roxas?”

“Um. Yeah. Yeah, I am. Thanks, Axel.” Roxas shivered a little and called back his psychs.

Axel clapped him heartily on the shoulder and began steering him towards the reaper guarding the wall. “Well, good news is that that Noise was our task. Your scanning just left you open to it before I could get there. So, let’s hurry up and get this whole mission done before the timer runs out, okay?”

Shrugging, Roxas let himself be pushed into place, musing quietly that maybe he was overrating Axel’s annoyance just a little. He was useful, after all.

And if maybe Axel’s hand lingered a bit too long, checking to see if Roxas was really okay, if maybe Roxas dragged his lips against Axel’s retreating wrist in the faintest hint of a kiss, well. Really, only the matching flushes on their faces would give away that perhaps they could be a bit more than just partners in the Game.
