The stars looked close enough to touch, the years of distance irrelevant. For miles between them, space went on and on, and it was scary -- the greatness of it. You could disappear into it and be lost forever.
But Demyx knew what he was doing.
Clutching at old light, first, and then enjoying the silence that rivaled music. Not breathing. Seeing shapes in the black folds of space and dancing between atmospheres.
He tried to be serious, he really did. He knew his mission, printed so neatly and so verbosely on three 3x8 cards, was really just to "take one for the team...thanks man."
But he wasn't scared, couldn't be scared, and he loved to dance. There was no where like the sky for dancing. Nearly the whole universe was empty. It was his, if he wanted it.
He had flown through the oceans on Earth last, before that, he had walked the jungle, and had once explored time. And now he danced in starlight, reveling in how the ancient light sparkled on his sleeves. He touched the sun, laid on the moon, and watched the planets whirl.
But not for too long. He only ever visited the other worlds. Living in space? Or underwater, or anywhere, alone, was not a life. The last thing on his mind was death, and he didn't remember what it was like to feel fear.
Everything was fine out and tonight, he danced in moonbeams and went back home again.
