“You’re not looking for a ghost, you know.”
Kairi turned, grateful yet again for her altered Halloween Town body. Her own tail swished in time with the cat perched upon the graveyard wall and her ears could prick to hear his heartbeat thumping. Her new eyes magnified whatever moonlight the rain clouds let through and she could see his black fur shine with water. A cat who liked the rain. Who knew.
She put her clawed hands on her hips and smiled. “I figured as much,” she said in the cat language. “Takes way more than ghosts to get the spooks around here spooked. My name’s Kairi. Who are you?”
The cat blinked his green eyes and stood up, padding along the wet stones of the wall. “It would take me far too long to explain who I am.”
Kairi tilted her head. The rest of the Halloween Town folks weren’t nearly this mysterious. She followed after him, the bells on her tail jangling in the wind. “No, I mean… What’s your name?”
“I know what you meant,” the cat said, sounding utterly annoyed. “But ‘who are you?’ is a much better question than ‘what’s your name?’, don’t you think?”
They both stopped at the same time and stared at each other. Kairi could hear her own heart in her chest now. Something wasn’t right.
“Have you buried all your bones, Kairi?” the cat asked.
Someone grabbed the collar of her dress roughly and light cracked in her eyes as the back of her head collided with a tombstone.
She could smell him before her vision settled back into shapes, instead of just the pain-blur-colour it was now. And even though her smell hadn’t been cat-acute the last time they had met, she knew who it was.
“You’re dead. You don’t exist,” she said and it was getting harder to breathe and she wasn’t sure if it was because Saïx’s hands had found her windpipe, his lips finding the shell of her ear or the brief thought that Sora and Riku might not find her for a couple of hours.
“I exist in your memories, Your Majesty,” he says, his breath cold in her ear and his sharp nails dragging runs in her stockings. She tries to summon Pumpkin Patch to her hand, but her own breath catches when his hand grabs her hip, underneath her dress. “You haven’t forgotten me. But then-”
He leans back, and her head is still spinning and his terrible terrible grin falls on her eyes like the lessening rain. The clouds were parting. “How could you ever forget?”
And the moon shone down.
