I can't really think of an American friend who doesn't face these ridiculous issues, but for the most part, they don't have life-altering medical conditions. It really upsets me when not only do these prices affect a person's future, but their day to day living.
My health care right now has a $1,000 deductible. I can't imagine a $1,500. My health insurance also only covers, basically, me being hit by a car and needing major surgery. And then I'd have to pay, again, 20%-50% out of my own pocket. (In fact, if my grandmother hadn't insisted I get health insurance, I wouldn't see the point to it. I can't go to the doctor for the flu, or mend a broken bone. I can't really have an office visit or go to the ER.. I'd have to pay for those.)
I thought you were already on disability? If you don't happen to get approved, keep trying. I was told by a friend that they usually turn people down twice before they give in, then pay retroactively.
I dunno, man. The whole thing makes me feel ill. I wish you the best of luck with your medical headaches. <3
yeah, it's nuts. i almost didn't have health insurance, myself, point of fact. i only just finished my probation period at a new job when i got sick. literally. my knee began swelling on a monday, and my insurance kicked in the following friday. if i had been diagnosed before it kicked in, who knows what would have happened? so, that's a blessing, at least.
i've actually only been trying for disability since the new year. i was hoping this wasn't going to be a permanent condition, and i'd be able to go back to work, but i'm just not hitting a remission. we've already decided that if i'm turned down, we're going right for a lawyer; i can't afford to waste time reapplying since i'm losing COBRA and i'll have to be paying for a private insurance policy.
