mom: oh, geez, kim... your forehead is peeling so bad...
kim: didn't you know? the leper look is in this season.

so, anyone who knows me even just a little knows i'm notoriously bad at keeping in touch with people consistently. my earth is flat, you see; i don't notice that i've sailed off the edge until africa passes by overhead.

this time, i've been out and about for nearly three weeks, and it was, by and large, planned. i apologize that i was horribly remiss in informing everyone that i would be spending so much time away from home. i was in the daytona beach area, florida, and i have a very good reason why...

this is keith anthony davenport, my brand new nephew! well... actually, he's my cousin's son, and by nephew, i'm referring to the fact that all my cousins' kids do/will call me aunt kim. my someday kids will call them their aunt and uncles, too.

my cousins and i were pretty much raised together, and are as close as siblings, anyway.

that all sounded better in my head, but it does make sense in practice, i swear.

but, back to the boy...

he was born 1459 on 06 August, weighing 9lbs. 12oz, and measuring 21.5" long, with a full head of gorgeous strawberry blonde hair. big baby, but, then, so was his daddy (and so was i, point of fact).

we arrived in ormond beach early on the 7th, and were lucky enough to be there to help from the start. it was a bit touchy in the beginning; his mom had to have an emergency c-section, because he was stuck in the birth canal with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck (thus, our hasty departure).

no damage done to the baby, thank the lord, and though there were some issues with his mom, she's getting much better with each new day. it was not a perfect pregnancy, either, but i think the experience only served to make him tenacious. the kid is strong. i mean, lifting his head on his own the second day kind of strong. by day three, we had to be very careful laying him on a bed or couch, because the little bugger could roll onto his side. he has vise grips for hands, and c-clamps for jaws. though his nickname is piglet (he's a grunter), i refer to him more often as ka-el.

coming home was a 15-hour ordeal via car; there were four of us traveling, and this: "hi, i'm psoriatic arthritis, and i'll be reenacting the civil war all along your spinal column from georgia to maryland, thanks!" i wanted to strangle those i love most, and i was generally euphoric the first day back (i slept most nights on the hotel room floor, on an air mattress under the vanity outside the bathroom...and i wish i was kidding about that...). now, though, my laundry is done, and i miss my cousin and the baby badly. i keep waking up for my turn at feeding and changing (which was always around 0400-0500), but there's no one to feed or change. i'm nowhere near depressed, or what not, but i am probably the saddest i've been since my dad died.

i think maybe i want kids more than my psyche-demon will let me realize.

oh, by the way... i got a pretty bad sunburn in st. augustine, but bad only in appearance. it never really bothered me all that much. i think it's the medicine's fault.

that's in case you were wondering about the leprosy reference.

and even if you weren't, actually...

celebrations, family, travel, shenanigans
