Why I Support the Content Strike

Mar 20, 2008 18:48

Dear Livejournal,

I have been a great supporter and long-time user of Livejournal. I started my account in December of 2000, and in that time have posted 1,993 entries and 7,009 comments. I have generated a lot of traffic for Livejournal, receiving 7,763 comments in my journal.

And now, for one of the first times, I am seriously considering leaving livejournal. I am upset by the way that SUP notified the users that basic accounts had been removed. Rather than being up front about it in the actual news.livejournal.com posting, the announcement was couched in the guise of stream-lining the registration policy. Only after users noticed and commented on the removal did SUP choose to finally acknowledge their actions. This action was taken in opposition to the recommendation of the Advisory Board.

Furthermore, I am disheartened by the news that livejournal has been censoring the interests of its users. Homophobia, misogyny, and racism must not be a part of the decision making processes about appropriate content of the site, including what user interests are deemed appropriate. Many of the users of Livejournal are adult and their interests may be adult in nature. Flagging adult content was barely acceptable; to eradicate our interests from your front page is a slap in the face. If you don't want me and my sexuality on your website, then be upfront about your discrimination and I, and more than half of your users, will leave.

I will not be posting any content from 8PM EDT today until 8PM EDT tomorrow as part of the content strike. I am sick of being told that companies don't listen to the consumers; I won't continue to be a consumer if nothing is done to resolve our complaints.

Sincerely,
KGola

[note] I will not be posting any content from 8PM tonight until 8pm tomorrow. I have changed my homepage so that it is no longer my friends page. I am disabling comments on my journal until after 8PM tomorrow. I don't support every reason that the content "strike" was formed (if LJ wants to eliminate basic accounts, fine; there's still the free option of plus accounts - and yes, I'm aware it's not technically a strike, but since that's what it's being called, I'm going with it), but I strongly disagree with the methods by which LJ's users were informed and information was hidden. I also protest the homophobia and sex-phobia of LJ.
