Well, in terms of jackets and pants and suit sets and such, most everyone who has commented here has got you covered. I'll talk about the shirts and ties then.

Generally nice rule is having a tie that brings the color of the shirt out. For instance, is you wear a navy blue suit, it is good to have a light blue shirt (preferably with the collar the same color) and a dark blue tie. You can do that with a white shirt as well.

Also, depending on the instance of what you may need the suit for, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS go for the plain-ish look. Single-breasted suits, regular (non-French) cuffs, no tie pins or crap like that.
