Start of a loose fantasy series involving metal dragons. I found the worldbuilding to be somewhat weak (eventually I decided that comparisons to "live wire" and "gasoline" were mistakes by the authors), and it was puzzling that a book about a war never once mentioned what kinds of weapons the soldiers use. The magic was interesting, and the characters well written, though there were too few women.
