I am getting sick of painting our downstairs bedroom. The walls are mostly done and just need a few touchups, but the molding and doors are turning out to be somewhat of a project of my own creation. It's a small bedroom, but it somehow manages to have three doors (two exits and a closet), and two windows, and craftman bungalow molding for all the doors and windows plus crown molding plus a tall baseboard molding. The lines are all clean and beautiful, but somewhat intricate when it comes to painting them. Plus, I suspect that they are currently covered with an oil-based paint. I discovered this after I painted all three doors and two baseboards with not one, but TWO coats of paint, and then tried to use some masking tape on them. The new paint came off in big, giant sheets, leaving a gleaming white surface. I guess I should have used primer after all. *sigh*
Scrape, scrape, scrape. Remove new paint from doors. Cover with stinky primer. Repaint with two new coats of paint. This means when I'm all done, I'll have put a total of FIVE coats of paint on the stupid doors. They are old fashioned solid-wood five panel doors, and I'm painting the panels a different color (hence the masking tape). And then I need to work on the baseboards and the windows and the crown molding. And I'd like to get this all done before Kim comes to visit the weekend after next, but I'm not sure if I'm going to make it.
My other problem: I've too damned social. Instead of staying home and working on the house, I've been having a lovely time hanging out with friends. Saturday was hiking with Mary and Al on Sauvie Island. (Sunday day was scraping doors #1 and #2, priming and repainting door #1.) Sunday evening was dinner and a movie with Jiro. (Monday was priming door #2 and a baseboard.) Tuesday was sushi with Mary. Wednesday was barn night followed by late night drinks with Anne at Roadside Attraction (although no drinking was actually done since they have no table service and I didn't feel like going to the bar and asking. So, instead, we hung out on the patio for three hours for free and were completely ignored. Strange way to run a business.) Tonight I'm going out to dinner with my brother and his wife and talking about baby shower plans. Saturday evening is Alice's birthday at Clyde Commons. And either Saturday or Sunday afternoon will be hiking in the Gorge with Anne and one of her friends. Next Thurday: dinner with an old friend, Michael. Next weekend: Kim and Ian! It's a lovely, wonderful life with no time for mundane stuff like housework and painting.
