The Boy Who Was Confused by K.F.P.
Box 1: A blonde boy facea backwards in his chair at his desk. From the front of the room, the teacher tells the class that "50 plus 50 equals 100." Box 2: The boy has turned back around and is frowning. He is writing on his paper. There is a question mark above his head.
Box 3: A close-up of the boy's paper, with the problem "50 plus 50" on it. He has answered "20."
Box 4: The boy realizes he doesn't know the answer and is angry. He jumps up from his desk. The chair hits the ground with a "thunk." He throws his paper and says, "Blaa! Stupid paper!" Box 5: The boy hits his head against the wall and waves his arms wildly. Box 6: The boy has an angry black cloud over his head. He throws his book against the wall with a "bang." Box 7: The boy's temper tantrum in the back of the room is noticed by his classmates. A red-haired classmate turns in his desk to see all the commotion, a question mark over his head. From the back of the room, we see a book flying, movement marks and an indecipherable thought bubble. Box 8: The boy is on the floor having a temper tantrum, throwing his book, pencil, paper. His anger has become a black and red cloud around him. Box 9: The anger cloud has expanded to fill the whole frame with black, red and a little blue.
Box 10: A classmate looks towards the back of the room, sees the anger cloud, and says, "What the!" Box 11: The anger has become a tornado, labeled "tornado." Box 12: The anger tornado approaches the front of the room. From the right-hand side, someone yells, "Aaagh!" Box 13: The anger tornado is dissipating into a smaller swirl of green, yellow, pink and purple. Box 14: The anger tornado is smaller, in the middle of the frame, a blotch of green, black, pink and yellow on a yellow background.
Box 15: The blonde boy is sitting at his desk with his hand up, looking lost. A girl with brown hair, wearing pink, smiles as she talks to him. Above them, a purple arrow indicates they are friends. The girl gives him a tip: "Use the counting blocks. Pretend each one is ten." Box 16: There is a brown table containing 10 pink stackable blocks. From off to the side, we see the boy's speech bubble: "10, 20, 30, 40, 50..." Box 17: A close-up of three of the counting blocks, as the boy continues: "60, 70, 80..."
Box 18: Two final pink blocks are on a table, and the voice continues: "90, 100!" Box 19: The boy does the "one-hundred dance," a huge smile on his face, his arms and legs in motion, and the number "100" all over the yellow background. Box 20: The boy is at his desk, facing front. He smiles and raises his hand and says, "50 plus 50 equals 100." Box 21: The teacher, wearing a black and white striped dress and with brown shoulder length hair, tells the boy, "Correct!" The boy triumphantly calls, "Oh, yeah! Oh, yeah!" Box 22: We see the school from outside. It is a small brick school with a black fence. The sky is blue. The sun is yellow. From a window, the boy's speech bubble comes, saying, "Ya-hoo!" Box 23: On a green background are the words "The End." To the right of them is the boy's speech bubble, still celebrating, saying, "Oh, baby! Oh, baby!"
A note from
alycewilson: KFP, who is 6, developed this response to this week's prompt, "I need the struggle to feel alive." We talked about things you might struggle with and how it feels good when you resolve them. He thought of a boy having trouble with his math, and the story took life from there.
I have corrected spelling for my descriptions of the comic so that it will sound better for anyone using a program that reads web pages aloud.
