So, having to make a big-boy decision, we had all the trees cut down that grow along our property line between the house and garage.
There were about 7 Manitoba maples and 2 elm trees. The trees that weren't encroaching on (and destroying) the garage were too tall, too thin, and cracking vertically. One tree in particular grew in a great "Y" with it's two parts at 45 degrees. One directly over the neighbour's house and power lines and the other directly over our house.
We found an arbourist who charged us just under $1000 to do the whole shooting match, which they said they would probably get to in a couple weeks.
Needless to say I was surprised when I came home today to find all the trees gone. We still have our two great lindenwood trees in the front yard and our row of lilacs, but the back yard seems so stark and ugly with the trees gone.
We have plans of building a fence and planting a big shade-tree of some sort, and then something more manageable between the properties, like a type of low cedar or something. But right now the back yard, going from a shady, green, and relatively private place is now just empty and full of yellow grass.
I know it had to be done, but I do miss the trees most muchly.
I think we're going to be going to a nursery this week-end to scope out a new tree. The sooner we start, the sooner we can get something growing.
