Hyuna fidgets, playing with the menu in her hands. It's laminated, but old enough to be bent and torn and dirty despite that. A waitress stops and fills her coffee cup without asking, but she doesn't protest it, despite the pressure slowly building in her bladder and the buzz building in her brain. A soft laugh floats across the table and Hyuna looks up, pouting at her companion.
"What's so funny?" she asks.
"Nothing..." Amber grins, goofy and excited, the way she's been since they landed in the US. "It's just... you know you could say no to the refills, right?"
"I know that." Hyuna's cheeks flush and she looks down at the menu. She doesn't want to confess that her English is still not good enough, at least she doesn't think so. They've only been out of the airport for fifteen minutes, but Hyuna already regrets taking the trip. She knows it's inevitable that she'll meet Amber's family, but she hasn't even come out to her own yet. "I'm just nervous."
"You'll be less nervous once we eat." Amber's foot nudges hers under the table. "Come on, order whatever you want."
The English on the menu has suddenly turned into gibberish in Hyuna's eyes, so she just puts it down and smiles at Amber. "Um, I'll just have whatever you do."
"Okay." Amber nods and flags a waitress, placing their order.
Hyuna purses her lips when she notices Amber's gaze follow the waitress as she leaves. More specifically, the way Amber's gaze follows the sway of the girl's hips. It's something Hyuna hates, but she supposes that Amber hasn't cheated in her in the two years they've been together, so there's no reason to worry. After all, they're going to meet Amber's family. It's a big step as far as commitment goes. They'd even had the reassuring talks whenever Hyuna panicked in the weeks leading up to the trip. So Hyuna resists the urge to kick Amber and just sips her coffee.
"Still nervous?" Amber asks, drinking water instead. She hasn't touched her coffee, which was probably a good choice. The coffee isn't very good.
Hyuna nods. "Super nervous." She leans forward. "Are you sure they'll like me?"
A group of rowdy young men come into the diner just then and more than one of them give Hyuna once-overs, causing her to wish that she hadn't worn shorts, even though it's a boiling summer day. Amber glares at them and they move on, leaving Hyuna to flush in embarrassment. The trip is really shaping up badly so far and she wishes that it would be over soon.
"Anyway..." Amber nudges Hyuna under the table again. "They're gonna love you, Hyuna. I mean, Jessica and Krys loved you and they're practically family. My family knows I'm a lesbian anyway, so stop worrying."
"Mine don't know, though," Hyuna whines, starting to pick at a napkin.
Amber reaches across the table and grasps her hands. "Stop worrying. I have a place there now, remember? If your family kicks you out, you can just move in with me. It's no big deal."
Hyuna feels like crying at that, at how strongly Amber can state her opinions and how hard it is for her to do the same, and nods. It's only a little reassuring, but for now, it'll have to do. "Okay."
