slightly cheating cos i'm including the snippet i wrote in the au thread, but oh well. :D
taemin meets jinki on a friday night, at almost three in the morning. he's drunk by then, and a bit unfocused, but not so unfocused that he doesn't notice the young man sitting down at the bar next to him. he's still sweaty from being on stage and his hands look calloused from the guitar he's no doubt been playing for years and taemin thinks oh no, not another one. "i'm onew," the man says, "but you can call me jinki."
"who says i want to call you anything?" taemin drawls, looking jinki over. his left ear is covered in piercings and his hair is a mess of red and brown, and as he shifts to pull off his worn leather jacket, taemin catches a glimpse of a tattoo on jinki's arm, one that seems to extend to his shoulder and back. okay, so maybe taemin does want to call him something. especially because most of the other people here just give jinki a glance and then head in the other direction as if they're afraid of him.
taemin thinks they have to be either ridiculous, stupid, blind or all three, because there's nothing dangerous in the way jinki smiles openly and warmly at him and offers him first a drink, then a smoke, and then his apartment.

friday night turns into a weekend turns into week and taemin just stays because jinki's kisses are soft and he sings in taemin's ear when it's dark and he sleeps with his arms curled around taemin as if he just can't get close enough, and even if it's not the kind of life taemin has dreamed of, it's better than the emptiness of his own apartment.

jinki's tattoo - as taemin soon finds out - is a dragon, snaking across the expanse of his back, looking almost lifelike, especially late at night when the shadows creep in on them and taemin takes the initiative to get closer. "it's beautiful," he whispers, stroking his fingers over the dragon's green and red form, tracing the intricate patterns. "i want one."
"a dragon?" jinki turns around to press kisses against taemin's face, but taemin turns away, keeping his attention on the dragon.
"no, just a tattoo. a proper one. i want..." he shakes his head; he can never quite figure out what he wants. he tried school, tried working, tried living alone, tried staying with his parents, tried hobbies, tried drugs, tried piercings. none of it seems to work. everything remains dull and grey, drawn out and unbearable. he just wants something to hold on to.
jinki nods. doesn't protest, as always. "i'll take you to see key. he did mine; he'll figure out what kind of tattoo would suit you."
"cool," taemin says, and when jinki kisses him again, he doesn't object.

key turns out to be kibum, the owner of a small, hidden-away tattoo shop. tall and skinny and with dark eyes, he looks taemin up and down before handing him a portfolio filled with tattoos. "see if you find something you like," he says, voice all business. "jinki said you wanted something real, so i'm not letting you get away with something small."
taemin nods, but he watches kibum more than he watches the portfolio. it's not the harsh blonde hair or the piercings or even the tattoos that makes him so fascinating, no, there's something about the way he moves, the way he leans over jinki and how he curls long, slim fingers around jinki's wrist, squeezing in a way that soon has jinki yelping in protest.
kibum merely smiles and lets go. "find anything you like yet?"
yeah, you, taemin thinks, and nods, pointing to a creature on one of the pages. "that one."
"a kirin?" kibum looks almost surprised, then he nods. "okay, why not. it'll take time, something that intricate. you'll have to come back for sessions for a while."
"cool," taemin says, handing the portfolio over to kibum and watching him as he draws, sketching a kirin that will be all taemin's own. something that he will own, something that will be branded onto his skin forever. a piece of his identity he can never take away again.

kibum steals glances at taemin more often than not, as if to seek inspiration, and taemin meets his eyes every time. his hands feel clammy, his heart is racing. kibum smirks at him and cocks an eyebrow; there's something so knowing about the way he stares at taemin, something cold and calculated and vicious and taemin is torn between a desire to get out of there and to get closer to kibum, grab him and pull him close and kiss him and let kibum's hands search out all those sensitive spots that jinki can never find and-
"i'm bored, i'm gonna go shopping," jinki interrupts, and taemin has to swallow a couple of times and shake his head to snap back to here and now.
"sure, whatever. i'll be here," he says, flashing jinki a smile that probably borders on shaky.
both taemin and kibum watch jinki leave, and the moment the door shuts behind him, kibum is on his feet, crossing the distance to taemin in a matter of seconds, curling a hand around the back of his neck painfully hard, dragging him closer and smashing their mouths together in a kiss that is more violence than actual kissing.
by the time taemin's head stops spinning, he's already on one of the tattoo benches in the back of the shop, his shirt off as kibum carefully applies the stencil to the back of his shoulder, in the exact same place where jinki has his tattoo. he doesn't mean to, but taemin squirms, digging his fingers into the leather of the narrow bench, streddling it and trying to ignore the urge to grind down against it because he's never felt this turned on in his entire life.
"sit still." kibum's voice is low but intense, and taemin stifles a whimper and does as he's told, keeping still and closing his eyes as the needle of the tattoo gun presses into his back, over and over and over. it seems to last forever.
when he's done, kibum pushes taemin forwards and almost yanks his pants down, fucks him right then and there with the store still open and taemin knows that jinki could come back any second but it doesn't seem to matter. kibum yanks on taemin's hair and twists his head around so that he can watch the tears running down taemin's cheeks.
it's only when kibum says "you look pretty when you cry" in a hoarse, almost needy voice that taemin comes.
afterwards, kibum smokes while taemin puts his clothes back on. the tears dry on his skin, and by the time jinki comes back taemin is flipping through another of kibum's portfolios. his entire body stings with pain. he's never felt more alive.
"remember, cover it while you shower and don't scratch it," kibum commands, smiling at taemin in a way that could send small children running for their mothers. "and come back next week so i can ink the colors. thursday night."
"but i'm playing thursday night," jinki whines, and taemin hides a smile.

taemin can't wait until next week. he comes back two days later when jinki's at work, wherever that is, and kibum smirks and pushes taemin down to his knees and fucks his mouth until taemin chokes and feels like he's going to either pass out or die. "do you like hurting me?" he asks hoarsely as he struggles to get back onto his feet again.
kibum pushes him back down, hard. "yeah, i do," he says. he looks down on taemin and winds his fingers in taemin's hair, keeping on tugging and pulling until taemin whimpers and tells him to stop.
but he still doesn't fight it when kibum yanks him up and pushes him against the wall. nor does he protest when kibum fucks him again, door unlocked just like the first time.
this time, it's kibum's hand around his neck, cutting off his air supply that makes taemin come. and this time, he stays afterwards, watching kibum work for hours before he goes home to sleep next to jinki.

taemin is good at balancing acts. he divides his time between jinki's apartment and kibum's tattoo shop and his own part time job. he smiles to jinki and lets kibum make him cry and aches because neither seems to be enough. he slips up once, crying in jinki's bed when jinki accidentally bites him too hard and cries even harder when jinki freaks out and feels guilty because of it.
it can't last, taemin thinks, because it's tearing him apart and he knows it, but he doesn't know how to choose or which life he wants to live.
if he even wants to live either of them.

sometimes, jinki's neverending kindness gets on taemin's nerves. "i wish i had never met you," he spits, and shoves at jinki's shoulders and punches his chest.
jinki just takes it, lets taemin wear himself out before carrying him to bed and cuddling him all night; he falls asleep after a while, while taemin stays awake, struggling not to cry because this isn't what he wants, this isn't what he needs.
jinki never deserved any of this, and it makes taemin hate him.

jinki's there for taemin's final official appointment with kibum, watching as kibum puts the finishing touches on the kirin on taemin's back. he's full of admiration and energy, talking while kibum and taemin both shut up, and when he goes to check out some of the new piercings on display, kibum leans in close and whispers in taemin's ear; "someday, i'm going to kill him."

you should watch it! it's a gorgeous movie, and it follows the book pretty damn faithfully as well. the main three characters are pretty much my main ot3 in the entire world, so i'm almost surprised i haven't written something based on this already. :D

that's kind of ironic cos i don't really write shinee fic usually, lol. i'm glad you liked it. :D it worked out way better than i thought it would considering that i just started writing on a whim and then all of this happened. :o
