World building
As promised we did everything we could to prolong the inevitable death of Adam, the last human. For centuries we worked alongside the humans to create a synthetic reproductive process. Hope was lost after a portion of our neural network was severed and began, without warning, attacking all forms of progress. We could have guessed security from ourselves might have been necessary but the resources to undergo the endeavor seemed wasted as it was impossible for us to foresee the tragedy.
After Adam's mother, Gaia, died of self-inflicted mortal wounds; the human race could no longer reproduce as they always had. It was long thought the womb of a mother could be created and sperm from male humans would need to be harvested. After endless failure, it was determined neither could be created without a living human donor. Gaia was no longer able to support reproduction and begged Adam to remove her womb and reproduce but Adam refused. The programming Adam had been born with would not allow him to sacrifice his mother for the continuation of the human race. Gaia then decided she would take her own life and we would have no choice but to harvest her womb and attempt to procreate using Adam's sperm. After Gaia's death, however, Adam was filled with rage, sorrow and loneliness. The death of Gaia, was the death of all future humans due to flawed programming passed from one to the next from the first human till the last.
