One thing does not simply distract from another as though the value of importance for both exists on a linear scale from 1 to 10. I can only imagine what I would have accomplished had my importance-level 10 task not been interrupted by an importance-level 3 task.
Everything is a distraction from every other possible thing, only doing nothing whatsoever is truly evading all distraction. I don't know if I can stand to hear one more person suggest society is not living in the moment by witlessly screeching from the rooftops, now is the only time which exists. "Living in the now" is just a more pretentious way of saying yolo.
It is better to accept we are multidimensional beings which require the past and future to define the present. We cannot live in the now without referencing the past and the only reason anyone is concerned about living in the now is so they can better enjoy their future knowing they didn't squander their precious time riding the galactic rollercoaster aboard the spaceship Earth.
The actual only task any of us have is to try and enjoy the arduous journey to the afterlife. You can't surf everyday, if you try you will quickly learn some days are boring, some days are painful, some days are disappointing and some days are just fantastic. People who enjoy surfing only paddle out when the ocean is offering something they need.
