I don't know...

I just got back from a meeting with my Womens Studies prof. She was pissed...very pissed. Apparently I offended her and insulted her by expressing my opinion. I guess I'll give a little background info for those that care.

We were discussing in class the issue of surrogacy mothers. The prof was taking the side that if a surrogate mother decided to keep a baby that she initially promised to give to the biological parents that she is fully in the right to do so. When asked if it mattered if there was a written contract signed on the deal, my prof responded "It doesn't matter. Contracts are broken everyday in this country."

I want you all to really think about this for a minute...

OK, now. Being the kind of person that makes rash decisions and says things before I think about them, I basically said that that was a piss poor defense of the surrogate mother. That logic is childish and bullshit. If we were to apply that kind of logic to everything in our country, what would it be like? If everyone broke promises just because some people do it, or everyone reneged on agreements because agreements are broken everyday we would never have anything to rely on. Of course contracts and agreements are broken, but we must all strive to stick to our word. If we can't do that, how can we ever trust each other? But basically she was pissed that I called her logic "on the level of a middle school child." Which I can understand. I guess I could have made my point without sounding like an asshole, but at least everybody else in the class agreed with me. Marcus gets the last laugh. But then again, she will probably fail me for being an asshole so...

On a somewhat related note, I was thinking about the point of view people have when hearing a story such as this. I'm inclined to think that most of the people who heard my side of the story will take sides with me. Which I suppose is good, but at the same time it isn't. My prof told her side of the story to her colleagues and the WMS department chair and they all said that I was "extremely insulting." But all they heard was a one sided story, much like you just did. I don't know where I'm going with this so I'll just end this topic here.

I'd like to write more but I don't think anyone has this kind of attention span so I'll put more in next week. Peace.
