Yesterday, we saw Babel in Kawasaki. It was incredibly powerful. The way everything just comes together in the end: you think you knew what was going on, and for the most part you did, but actually you didn't, - the fact that the media kept saying she died, but she was still alive; the fact that the scenes weren't in exact chronological order led you to believe one thing but it turned out to be another. The fact that there were still some important things the audience didn't know. The juxtaposition at the end showing the feelings of all three (four) sets of children/parents.
But I think one of the most powerful things was that you think you know what's going on - you think everything has been translated, you think you know when your translator is lying to you, and the version that's in your mind makes total sense with the reality - but actually you don't. Before going into it, I was worried it would be just another movie, except everyone speaks different languages, so therefore you can call it "Babel." But it's so much more than that. And yeah, Kikuchi Rinko's performance was amazing.
At the ending credits, if you look for "Casting - Japan," you can see Yoko Narahashi, the founder of the company I work at.
Kikuchi Rinko is currently in Japan promoting the opening of Babel. I wondered if she or Yoko Narahashi would show up at our weekly training meeting last week, but no such luck. Of course she has a jam-packed schedule. BUT - one of the two English-speaking actors in "Letters from Iwo Jima" showed up at the weekly training session last year, so there's still hope!
