Chapter 7

-No One’s P.O.V-

The day had slowly crept its way into night and Tiffany had yet to see the mysterious woman again. It wasn’t, however, as if she was looking for her though. After she had unpacked her belongings she had crashed on her bed; her face smothered into her pillow. The last thing she remembered was being consumed by a scent that lingered and emanated from her pillow; a scent not of her own. It enveloped her senses and she drifted off into much needed sleep.

Cinnamon

Nature had called her from her dreams and reluctantly it caused Tiffany to wake; her mind in complete protest as the thought of more sleep was quite alluring. She sat up, failing to notice and realize that she had changed positions from when she fell asleep and was actually tucked under the covers. The thought of relief became too overwhelming to process anything else. She lazily made her way to the bathroom in her bedroom. When she was done and stepped out, her body requested something else from her. Although she was still tired, her body told her it was in need of something more in order to be completely satisfied. Her stomach began to contract and groan in agony as it wished to be filled with nourishment. She glanced at the clock by her bedside table: 11:38 p.m. “It’s kind of late to be eating,” she thought, “but I haven’t eaten anything since dinner the day before we left.” Her stomach cursed her once more and she made her way out of her room towards the kitchen downstairs. As she made her way down the steps, the air became clouded with a delicious aroma.

When she walked into the kitchen, she had found various dished laid out on the large marble counter. Her eyes wide and her mouth agape and watering, she bolted towards all of the delectable food. As she stuffed her mouth, cheeks full to bursting, she noticed a pink note by one of the plates. She reached over and began reading the elegantly written words carefully.

Since you fell asleep I suppose you’re hungry, right? Well, I made some food for you to eat! ^^ I wasn’t exactly sure what to make for you because I don’t know what you would have liked, so I made several things to choose from. And, if you don’t happen to like what I have made, I’ve left some money and menus on the fridge in case you would prefer to order something.^^ Also, your dad left earlier today. He had some business out of town to attend to and won’t be back for two weeks. >< Unfortunately, I don’t happen to have a contact number for him. Sorry )=. Don’t worry; it won’t be too long before you can see him. It’s almost a 13 day wait! XD Anyways, eat up! After you’ve eaten, head upstairs to your bathroom. I’ve put out some shampoo, toothpaste, everything you may need to freshen up. I assume because of your long trip it would be most helpful. Then you should head back to bed, alright? ^^

“Wow.” Tiffany was taken by such surprise. Of course she assumed the woman to be kind but she never expect all this; not all at once. Every other person who was her hired nanny in the past was very nice, but this woman … no stranger has ever done this for her … not like this. “Who are you?”

Tiffany had devoured all the food that was made. She felt no need to order because everything was perfect and delicious. She needed to thank the woman when she got a chance. She then headed up the stairs to the bathroom in her room to shower and get ready for bed. She found a change of clothes neatly folded and stacked on the counter, along with a new pink toothbrush and shampoo and conditioner. She took the bottle and read the label.

"Cinnamon Scented"

After she had changed and stepped out of the washroom, she stopped. In front of her on the floor lay another small folded pink note. She picked up the note and found one word on the inside as she opened it; one word that gave Tiffany a slight ease in her mind.

Taeyeon.

She had finally learned the name of the person who graced her with such a kind heart. She smiled bright as she repeated the name out loud. “Taeyeon. Tae … yeon. Tae … Tae. Tae-Tae. Hmm … Tae-Tae.” Her smile widened further at the new nickname she had created.

She walked over towards her desk and took a seat. She began to rummage through its drawers in search of something. She had found a pad of mini stationary paper. She then pulled out a pen from the cup of writing utensils that sat on the corner of her desk and began writing. The pen scritched and scratched against the paper until it came to a halt. She looked the words over and was happy with herself. She folded the note in half and got up from her desk. She walked out, towards the stairs she went and placed the note a few steps down from the top. “See you tomorrow … Tae-Tae.” She walked back to her room and buried herself in the covers of her bed. The comforting scent engulfed her senses once more. Tiffany immediately fell back into her dreams, failing to realize the buzzing noises that were being produced by her cell phone on the bedside table beside her clock.

-Taeyeon’s P.O.V-

“Kim Taeyeon, get up already!”

My eyes slowly opened and I had realized I had fallen asleep here; still sitting against the wall. I slowly started to move but my limbs were tight and sore. I looked down at my watch: 7:53 p.m.” I sighed. I began to push myself up the wall to stand. I stretched out a little to loosen my stiff muscles. Once I felt looser, I walked slowly to the corner I had turned before. I glanced down the hall to the room at the end. The door was still open and the lights weren’t on. I walked over to the room and stopped outside the entrance. I could make out the shadowy figure that lay sprawled out across the bed. She fell asleep on her stomach, feet hanging off the bed and face smothered in the pillow. “This kid,” I thought. I carefully managed to pick her up and pull the covers out from under her. I gently laid her back down on her back this time. I fluffed the pillow a little while it was under her head and pulled the covers over her. Once I finally managed to set her in bed properly, I took a minute to admire the person in front of me. I couldn’t get over how beautiful she really had become. My eyes darted over to the shelf of her awards and immediately only one stood out among them all; the one from her mother. I looked back at the sleeping figure. “Tiffany, did it hurt?”

-Flashback-

-Instrumental Ends-

“Great take Miss. Kim; you may take a break now.”

I bowed and stepped out of the recording booth. I lay on the couch in the room as they reviewed my track. My eyes began to close only to open again at the sound of his voice.

“Not too long now and you’ll be the talk of Seoul.” He took a seat next to me. “Excited?”

“I’m content. If I get over exited, I may end up getting my hopes up. And if I think about how this is actually happening, I’ll get too nervous and become a mess. So, I’m content and just enjoying the ride.”

“Your way of thinking is different from most people I meet.”

“I’m not most people. I was raised this way; in this manner.”

“I see.”

“Mr. H , can I ask you something?”

“What?”

Suddenly, my throat became a little dry. “You know that photo in your house, the one above the fireplace. It’s the one of the little girl in pink.”

“What about it?”

“Who is she?”

“My daughter, Stephanie.”

“Oh … I see.”

-Silence-

“So … where is she?”

“She’s in the states; she’s doing her schooling there.”

“That’s good. So … where’s her mother?”

“My wife died when Stephanie was seven.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. I know how she must feel.”

His voice became that of a whisper. Whether he meant to say it out loud was beyond me. “I wish I knew how she felt.”

“Sorry wha---“

“Oh nothing, just talking to myself.”

“Oh … ok then.”

“Anyways, there are some things I need to fix in your contract. Nothing big, just a few minor details. You’ll be alright re-signing it once it’s done?”

“Yeah that should be fine.”

“Great. Alright, I’ll let you get back to your recording the. Keep it up.”

“Thanks.”

I watched him as he exited the studio. He didn’t know how she felt? How can that be? She was his own daughter. Besides that, who wouldn’t feel hurt after a loved one passes away? Especially a mother; a wife, his wife. Does that mean he feels nothing about her death? What kind of person is this? I can only imagine that poor girl bawling her eyes out at the tender age of seven after learning that her one and only mother is now gone from this world. How did she deal ---

“Miss. Kim? Excuse me, Miss. Kim!”

“Hmm?”

“Were ready to start again.”

“Oh. Sorry … I was just a little distracted. My apologies, I’m ready to continue.”

-End of Flashback-

Tiffany, did it hurt? Was there anyone there for you? After being with him for this long, I can say with all confidence, he cares about no one else but himself. Did he pay you any mind at all? I highly doubt it. You had it rough, yet you still smile so bright. I know the hurt that you felt Tiffany; I know it all too well.

-Flashback -

We are sorry to inform you Mr. Kim that it has spread further that before. It’s beginning to attack parts of your brain and manifest itself in some of your other vital organs. We estimate you have 2-4 months before it becomes critical. Although there aren’t exactly large specific areas of infection, there is a swarm of small builds through out your body. I’m afraid that in this stage, because it’s not in one set area, there is nothing more we can do.

“I’m home!”

I quickly began wiping the tears that were streaming from my eyes and stuck the letter from the hospital back in its envelope. I placed it in the exact spot that I had first found it and began to make my way out of the kitchen to the front door.

“Ah Tae-Tae, how are you my dear?”
He still manages to smile brightly and even with his eyes; even through all the pain

“Dad … hi. I’m alright. A bit tired from school. How was your day?”

“The usual. Tae-Tae, your eyes are so red.”
I have to pull away from him. Even as he cups my face with concern I can’t do it. I’m going to end up breaking in front of him.

“Yeah, just really tired, that’s all. No need to get so worried you know. Your looking kind of pale though dad. Are you alright?”

“Me? Please. I’m fine, happy and healthy. I just had a long day too.”

“Ah, I see.”
Lies; lies that are “for my own good?” I wish you would just tell me yourself.
“I made some dinner for you. It’s in the pot on the stove alright? I have some homework to finish.”

“Thank you Tae-Tae. I should be spoiling you though, not the other way around.”

“Its fine dad, don’t worry about it.”

I give a smile that wasn’t mine at all; it was cheap, plastic … fake. But it was the only one I could muster.

“By the way, could we maybe hold off on the vocal training for a while? I’ve … got a big project coming up … and you look a lot more tired these days.”

“Sure dear, it’s no problem.”
His smile was a reflection of myself; the same cheep fake smile that tried to get you through the day

“Alright, then I’ll see you in the morning. Goodnight dad.” My voice was starting to shake and I quickly paced up the steps.

“Tae-Tae?”

“Yes?” My back was towards him so he couldn’t see the tears streaming down my face.

“I love you.”

There was a lump that had formed deep in my throat. I took a deep breath, trying to clear all the unsteadiness from my voice.

“Love you too dad.”

I ran up the stairs into my room and slammed the door shut. I slid down the door onto the floor and began sobbing violently. It hurt so much. I’m not usually this week. I can hold my own pretty well actually. I don’t normally cry like this. I couldn’t stop right now though; the pain was too deep to ignore this time.

“Please, you can’t leave me. Your all I have left in this world; you’re my home. Please!”

-End of Flashback-

During the time of replaying my memories, I had managed to sit myself on the edge of the king size mattress next to the head of the sleeping girl. I brushed her bangs from her face which made her scrunch her nose. I laughed on the inside at her cute innocence. “Tiffany, I know it hurt. And I’m sure it still does. We’re more alike than you may realize. I’m not giving up the closest thing I’ve had to home in a long time.” I smiles at her cute mumbling in her sleep that she began to produce.

“Uhh … Taeyeon … earth to Taeyeon! I hate to interrupt this oh-so-sweet moment right now, but don’t you think you should be getting out of here? I mean, sure you can stay, but given the face that it’s 9:30 and she most likely hasn’t eaten yet, she’s bound to wake up soon. Then she’ll be greeted to a creepy girl sitting next to her and staring at her with “big desperate loser” on her forehead and giant puppy dog eyes. Then, after she’s thrown you off her bed and beaten you up a bit, she’s gonna notice the contraption around your neck. And then you are officially screwed Kim Taeyeon!”

“Shoot,” I mouthed. I quietly got up and retreated from the room. I slowly she the door leaving it slightly cracked though so it wouldn’t be pitch black when she woke up. I started down the hallway; my thoughts in contemplation. “Wonder what she would want to eat?” I stopped at the foot of the stairs. “. . . GOT IT! Kim Taeyeon, you are a genius.”

2 hours later

I deserve a pat on the back. Ahahahaha … jeez I laugh like an old woman in my head too? Alright, everything’s ready … now where did I put those papers? I looked around the kitchen and the stack of pink papers and pen sat by the sink. I sat on the counter and began scribbling words for the sleeping Tiffany upstairs. Well … she WAS sleeping. The upstairs toilet flushed and I started to panic. “Must … Write … Faster! THERE!” I folded the note and placed it by the food. I could hear steps approaching the kitchen and I darted to the other side with my pen and papers in hand; thank goodness it has two entrances. I stood with my back to the wall in the sitting room. I listened and heard her gasp at the sight of all the food, I gave a quick fist pump in the air of triumph; almost dropping the pen and papers in my hand. I put them in my pocket and began to make my way out of the room and back up the stairs as swiftly as possible.

From the upstairs closet by the washroom I had slept near earlier, I grabbed some toiletries and proceeded to her room. I placed everything neatly on the counter of the bathroom, along with a change of clothes. Everything seemed to be in order … wait. “Crap, no shampoo.” I ran back to the closet but no sign of any. “Uhh … think Taeyeon. Oh! Duh!” I walked into the washroom by the closet and grabbed my shampoo and conditioner for her. “I’m sure she won’t mind.” I ran back to the room into her washroom and placed the items down. I had failed to realize the footsteps that were not of my own were becoming loud as they walked up the steps. She had finished eating and was coming up like I told her to. I ran out of the washroom and stood frantic in her room. “Crap, I can’t run out or she’ll see me! WHAT DO I DO? WHAT DO I DO!?!?! Back and forth across the length of the room, I began to run in panic with arms slightly flailing in the air. I felt like a chicken with its head cut off. The steps became even louder now. “UHHHH!!! UNDER THE BED!!!!” I saw my opening and dived for it. “That’s gonna leave a mark later.” I wriggled myself until I was completely hidden under the bed. I saw her feet walk through the door and I held my breath. She walked about the room for a few steps before making her way to the bathroom and shutting the door. Silence filled the air. I lay there and waited; still never letting go of my breath, though my lungs were in dire protest begging for release. I waited … and waited … and waited … and waited … and wai--- jeez this kid takes forever. The water had finally turned on and I let the air go and fill my lungs. My head was slightly dizzy after that. A minute passed before I decided to crawl out from under the king size mattress. I stood up and straightened my clothes before making my way towards the double doors. I stopped though because of something I had remembered something important I still had to do. I pulled out a piece of paper and the pen from my pocket and wrote one word on there in hopes that it may ease the girl. After all, shouldn’t she know the name of the stranger who was doing all this for her? I would find a way to explain everything else to her later but I think this should be enough for now.

I folded the note and backtracked to the bathroom door and placed it on the floor. After that I walked out of the room and made my way to my room. “Tiffany, did it hurt? I know the hurt all too well. Let’s be there for each other shall we? After all, people who have been through all this pain deserved to be healed, don’t they? Don’t we deserve that much at least?”

-End of Taeyeon’s P.O.V-

-Jessica’s P.O.V-

I paced with heavy steps across my room. Back and forth, back and forth my steps keep on. She was late; very late. Did something happen? Oh my goodness, what if he hurt her; made her cry? Should I call? Yes I defiantly should … but then … she told me that SHE would call me. “Jessi, I swear I’ll be ok, now go. I’ll call you later tonight ok?” LIES! But I have to believe she will. Maybe he didn’t do anything; there probably catching up or she could be sleeping. That’s a good excuse right? Yeah … I’m sure there is a reasonable explanation for ---

-BZZ BZZ-

I stopped in my tracks at the sound of the vibrating cell phone; MY vibrating cell phone. I dived to my nightstand as if it were about to fly away if I didn’t reach it fast enough; which probably wasn’t the best idea considering that now I’m throbbing in pain from the impact.

“ DAMN IT THAT FREAKIN HURT! AHH!”

“Jeez, Unnie. Just because you get excited over a phone call from Tiffany, it doesn’t mean that you need to be more uncoordinated than you already are.”

“Shut it! Not my fault YOU got the athletic genes in the family.”

“Technically it IS you fault. And, it’s not really genes so much as it’s the fact that I actually exercise and take care of myself. Where as you just sit around, eating, sleeping your days away and day dream about her.”

“Ok SHUT UP!”

“Seriously though, you’re so out of shape! I mean it took you FOREVER to carry me up the stairs; and you weren’t even gonna make it so that’s why I got off you. Oh, and I think you should answer the phone before she hangs up”

“Ah! Crap! Hello?” I glared at my little sister as she sat with her back against the wall on my bed. She brought the book she was reading back to her face. I caught the smirk of satisfactions she had before it was hidden behind the pages of text.

“Jessica? Hello, Jessica? You there?”

“Yeah I’m her--- wait, who is this?”

“Jessica! It’s Yuri. You know, Kwon Yuri? Friends since were like …”

“Oh Yuri. Yeah, hi!”

“You sound as if you were expecting someone else. I’m sorry, was this a bad time to be calling? I know it’s kinda late.”

“No, no. Don’t apologize. It’s good to hear from you after so long. Sorry, Krystal was just distracting me before.”

“WAS NOT! SHE FELL AND HURT HERSELF CAUSE SHE’S A GIGANTIC KLUTZ! HI YURI!!! OWW! UNNIE WHAT THE HECK? WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!?

“Because I’m older and I can! And stop calling me that, I’m not a klutz!”

“Right … you just have no sense of coordination and balance!”

“CAN IT KID!”

“MAKE ME!”

“Same old, same old at the Jung house I see.”

I realized Yuri was still on the phone even through our bickering. I smiled. Yuri was always a good listener.

“Yeah, it’s like I was never gone. Krystal, give me a minute please?”

I found it amazing how our personalities could change within the blink of an eye. No one could say we weren’t related. Even though were completely different were so similar; it’s kind of creepy at times but it’s what sisters do.

“Sure sure klutz. I’ll bring back ice cream then … just don’t drop it on yourself when I bring it.”

Krystal had gotten up and shut the door heading downstairs; I collapsed on my bed.

“So, how does it feel to be back?”

“Great. I missed everyone a lot.”

“What about me?”

“Oh stop your pouting you oversensitive baby. Of course I missed you too. And I can’t wait to see you when I start training.”

“YOU GOT ACCEPTED?”

“Yup.”

“I mean I knew how good you were but that’s really great. Though, I thought you wanted to go into the medical field.”

“I did, but I have a feeling that if I sing I’ll end up actually being happy in my life. I realized it really has turned into what I really want in my life. Knowing about the human structure; the circuit of nerves, the whole knowledge of it I’m sure is very beneficial for mankind. I won’t be happy though if I continue it, I just know it. So I decided to audition and I’ll be starting soon.”

“But Jessica, I thought you said that you would never audition for HM Entertainment. Wait … Tiffany’s going too isn’t she?”

My eyes were wide and my cheeks burned. “Why does that matter?”

“Never mind, it doesn’t matter.”
What’s with the sudden change in Yuri’s tone? She sound so exasperated now.
“Anyways, I’m glad you decided on doing something you love.”

“Thanks. Oh and I even snagged a spot in your dance class. So I’ll need to learn some skills from the master.”

“. . .”

“Yuri?”

“. . . BWAHAHAHAHA! Jessica? Dancing? AHAHA! … Sorry, I guess that could work.”

“YAH IM NOT THAT HOPELESS YOU KNOW!”

“Sure you aren’t. Anyway, I’ll let you go then. Sorry about the late call I just got excited to hear that you were finally back.”

“Wait, how did you know I was back in the first pla---“

“Krystal,” we said in unison.

“Alright Jessica, I’ll call you tomorrow? Or maybe we … we can hang out? If your free that is. We could meet at the mall or something? If … if you want.”

“Kwon Yuri, why are you so nervous all of a sudden? I’m not going to bite your head off.”

“I just didn’t know if you had plans or not; If you had made plans with your parents, or Krystal … or Tiffany.”

My heart stopped. I haven’t heard Tiffany’s voice since this morning. I hope she’s ok. Maybe I’ll ask her to come. Then again, Tiffany may want to spend tomorrow with him so I shouldn’t intrude. Plus, Yuri seems like wants to catch up.

“Nah no plans, Sure we can meet up. Noon is ok?”

“Yeah that’ll be great.”

“Alright then. Goodnight Yul.”

“Night Sica.”

I hung up the phone and Krystal walked in with two mugs; filled to the rim, whipped cream, bright red cherry on top with a spoon peeking out from the top.

“Well you went all out didn’t you? What happened to “I’m Krystal and I take care of myself.”

“I do! Please I don’t usually eat like this. It’s special cause your back stupid! Unless you don’t want it. I’m completely fine with that you know.”

“Oh just come here and sit. Thanks”

“Anytime sis. By the way, did you try calling Tiffany?”

I took a spoonful of the cold sweetness and let it melt away.

“No she might be sleeping. I don’t want to wake her.”

“Ah I see. You should at least text her or something.”

I looked at my phone in contemplation.

“. . .”

“Oh my, your hopeless.”

She snatched the phone and before I could take it back she pushed me down with one hand and sat on me.

“YAH GET OFF ME!”

“Nah I kind of like this. Now … Dear Tiffany, I wuv you! I miss you! I’m a hopeless person who will never ever tell you how I’ve felt about you for years. I’m--- AHHH GET OFF!!!!!”

I managed to push her off and sit on her just as she did to me. I cursed under my breath; she was right, I need to exercise more.

“Give me my phone and I’ll get up.”

“Only if you text her.”

“But she said---“

“Unnie, I’m not asking you to marry the girl! I know your worried about her. You’ve been waiting to hear from her all day. Just text her at least so I can have some piece of mind and so can you!”

I got off of my sister and sat next to her on the bed. She rubbed her stomach as it relaxed from the weight that was pressed on it and sat up. Her hand patted my back.

“Here, I’ll text her then.”

“Don’t know why you wouldn’t do that in the first place.”

I found her number in my phone and contemplated for a moment before finding the words to type out.

Tiffany! You never called me today DD: It’s kind of late so you’re probably sleeping. Did you eat? Are you ok? How did things go with him? You know I worry right? Anyways, when you see this, give me a call ok? I just want to make sure your alright. Night … well actually, Moring.^^ <3 Bye … Miyoung.

“Eww it’s so sappy if you read between the lines. Oh gosh a heart too? Cheesy! Ahh I crack myself up!”

“Do you want me to send it or not?”

She threw her hands up in a "I’m-backing-off motion." After a moment of hesitation I sent it. I cursed under my breath once more; damn she was right, I do feel a little better. I put down my phone on the nightstand and reached down at my neglected mug of ice cream. Krystal was finishing hers. We sat in silence. Nothing but the sound of spoons clanking against mugs filled the air.

“So, you talked to Yuri too?”

“Yeah, were going to meet up tomorrow and catch up.”

“How did she sound?”

“Happy to hear from me. She was kind of nervous at one point but nothing really out of the ordinary. I have that affect on people in general anyway. It was nice talking to her again. I haven’t been able to for a while what with school and all. It’ll be nice to see her after so long.

“I see.”

Silence fell upon us once again. We finished our snack and began to relax. She took her spot back at the wall with her legs sprawled out and her book in hand. I laid with my head against the pillow and my legs draped over hers; my IPod in hand deciding which track to fall asleep to.

“ Sigh … Unnie, Unnie, Unnie”

She mumbled it to herself but I caught ear of her words.

“Hmm?”

I looked at her waiting for a response. Her eyes never left her book as she spoke.

“Nothing, I was just thinking about how clueless you really are.”

I looked back at my IPod and found a song I wanted. Clueless about what?
