Chapter 3

-Taeyeon’s P.O.V-

“Jeez I can’t believe I slept in. He’s not going to be happy about this. He hates when I don’t wake up on time. Why on earth do they put a snooze button on an alarm clock anyway? You’re supposed to wake up, not continuously hit the button that will prolong the inevitable”. I rushed down the stairs towards the kitchen so I could get his breakfast ready. When I entered though, he was nowhere to be found. I looked around; the house was its usual vacant self. Very peculiar considering that he doesn’t leave for work this early. I glanced around the kitchen and realized something was out of place; or rather, something was added in order to make sure it was seen. A piece of paper was stuck by a magnet on the fridge. I walked towards the fridge and took the paper in my hand letting the magnet drop to the floor. “Leaving; I have business out of town for two weeks. Look after things and don’t go too far. Consider this . . . vacation time for you I guess.” “Don’t go too far?” I couldn’t help but touch the collar around my neck. “Like I had a choice” I thought bitterly. How could someone even think of doing this to another human being? Do they not have a conscious? Do they not see how immorally wrong and cruel it is?

I crumpled the paper and threw it in the garbage bin. It missed but I wasn’t about to pick it up. I looked at the room that surrounded me right now. Clean white kitchen; it sparkled as the windows illuminated it with the sunlight from outside, a large counter of marble with stools that lined its side. Each one stood untouched and undisturbed; only for show. This whole place was full of elegance, of class, of certain simplicity. It was such a grand house that he owned. It wasn’t even a house though now that I thought about it. It was a beautiful-to-die-for-mansion; a person’s dream home. But, it wasn’t even that either. A home holds a family. Hardly anyone was ever here to occupy the hollow emptiness of this palace. Love never sat in the air. Comfort was something that was abandoned and lost. I didn’t know when it dissipated but from the way the air sat here, it seems it hasn’t even really been around from the start.

I became so lost in thought that I didn’t realize the faint tapping sound that began to fill the void house. I tried to focus on it, and sure enough, there it was again. Someone was at the front door wanting entry. “Why would he knock,” I thought, “Doesn’t he have his key? Maybe he forgot it.” I walked out of the kitchen, past the stairs until I reached the front door. I opened it without hesitation but was taken off guard by the figure in the doorway. It had to have been a dream but it wasn’t. It was reality and she finally came.

-Flashback-

“So this is your home.” Taeyeon stared at the house in amazement. It was bigger and more beautiful than she could have ever imagined.

“Yes, it’s not much, but its home,” he said simply. His eyes fixed on Taeyeon as he spoke every word. His eyes glued to her just as they had done when she first saw him at the club. He was analyzing her; tracing her every outline, memorizing everything about her with his gaze. She didn’t know why he did it, but the uneasy feeling about him was brought back to her. Maybe it was a mistake for her calling and asking to meet with him. To play into what he seemed to want. Taeyeon didn’t know what his intentions may be, in fact, she hardly even knew the man that was before her. But her doubt ultimately left her when she remembered why she called him at all. She took a deep breath “I promised to make it, for both of us,” she thought to herself. She was determined to keep that promise no matter the cost.

“Not much? This place is incredible. And you live here all by yourself?”

“Well right now I do,” he said. There was a hint of pain in his words. Taeyeon could see that his gaze had left her and was now fixated on a picture that hung above the fireplace in his sitting room. A weak smile played on his on his face as his eyes lingered on the photo. Taeyeon, although still skeptical about this man, couldn’t help but feel some sympathy towards him. Obviously took look at it caused him some sadness that was too obvious in his expression. “Anyways, would you like something to drink? Then we can get down to business,” His eyes slowly averted from the picture to look back at Taeyeon.

“Sure,” she replied. He gestured for her to follow him to the kitchen and Taeyeon obliged; but not before walking over towards the hanging picture above the fireplace.

It was a girl, no older than fourteen or fifteen she guessed. The colour of the picture was slightly faded but that was probably from all the sun that would shine through the windows of the room. She was pretty; short brown hair with bangs that sat above her brows, white t-shirt with a light pink varsity jacket and jeans, and a smile that could melt your heart. It would make you question if you were in reality or some wonderful dream. But the thing that Taeyeon noticed more than anything else about her was those eyes. They smiled brighter than any jewel. They were full of light, purity, innocence, and love; love that Taeyeon hasn’t seen for a long time. With her eyes, Taeyeon felt she was home; home that had been long forgotten. She felt as though she was in her backyard of her old house, her dad next to her and their hands intertwined, staring at the night sky; staring at the wonderful crescent moon, which turned into two. Two beautiful eyes that lit up the evening sky. Taeyeon was so absorbed in her thoughts and this girl. “His daughter perhaps,” she asked herself. “They do resemble each other a bit now that I think about it.”

“Taeyeon are you coming?” His voice reverberated off the walls and brought Taeyeon out from her entranced thoughts. “Umm yeah, I’m coming.” She took one last glimpse of the photo before she started to walk to the kitchen. “Whoever you are, can you take me home?”

-End of Flashback-

-Tiffany’s P.O.V.-

The plane ride was so long. At least I managed to sleep through most of it until we hit some turbulence. I didn’t even bother trying to talk to Jessica; she was passed out before the flight attendant had even given the “In case of emergency” instructions. She even slept through all the shaking of the plane. I swear this girl could sleep through a tornado; completely dead to the world, unless of course she wills herself to wake up. Which is just what she did to wake me. She knows that on nights I get nervous I won’t be able to sleep at all. I’ll distract myself with a book or surf the internet. On nights like those, she makes sure she gets to bed as early as possible in order to wake me the following morning. She knew that I was nervous about going back. She may not look like it with that expression of hers, but Jessica cares about me more than she should. I don’t deserve her kindness but I don’t hesitate to take it either.

“Fany-ah, our cars are here.” We had managed to get our luggage and make our way out of the airport. All the while I couldn’t help but stare at my best friend in appreciation. I really don’t know where I’d be without this girl. She’s helped me through so much. “Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you? Fany? Yah Tiffany! HWANG MIYOUNG!!” I felt a thump on my head as Jessica had to snap me back to reality.

“Huh? What?” I didn’t realize how deep in thought I was or how long I had been staring at her.

“Yah PABO!” I felt a slap on my arm. “Pay attention or next time I’ll leave you to find your car yourself.” Jessica couldn’t help but laugh through her words and I returned her laughter with a smile she couldn’t refuse. “And don’t use that eye smile with me,” was all she use muster out.

“Sorry Jessi, what were you saying?” I smiled at her once more just to get on her nerves a bit. She looked irritated but a slight blush started to play across her face. Seeing her getting flustered is so fun. “And don’t call me Miyoung, you know I don’t like it,” I pouted.

“I won’t call you Miyoung when you learn to stop your eye smiling … in other words, its not going to happen sunshine. Like I was saying, our cars are here, you sure you don’t want me to come with you? I don’t mind.”

“No Jess, you go home. You know your family misses you and I know how much you miss them. Besides, the whole point it to surprise them! So go surprise them already!” I pushed Jessica towards her car. I wasn’t about to be selfish and drag her with me. I know she’s been anticipating this for so long now. Besides, I had to see him by myself. I can’t keep leaning on her forever. She can’t catch me every time I fall; I need to be able to pick myself up and stand on my own. “Jessi, I swear I’ll be ok, now go. I’ll call you later tonight ok?”

“You better … Miyoung”

“Yah, don’t use that name!” She laughed and handed her suit case to her driver. She opened the door but turned back to face me. The next thing I knew was feeling her weight on me. She pulled me into a hug that I knew was meant to give me strength. She knew I was nervous and so was she. I hugged her back taking in all that she gave me. “Tiffany, you know I’m here for you right?” I could only nod. My throat felt dry. It was really going to happen. I was going to do this without Jessica by my side. I was going back to a life that seemed so long forgotten. Jessica let go of me and wiped a tear from my cheek that I didn’t know had fallen. I wiped one that fell on hers too. We smiled at each other and gave a quick nod. We knew it was time to let go; to stand on our own. Jessica walked back to her car and I just stood there watching as it drove away. I was there, alone, standing on my own two feet.

“Miss Hwang, are you ready to leave now?”

I took a deep breath and nodded my head. The driver took my bag and I went to go sit in the back. I kept my head resting on the window, my eyes on the outside. I don’t know when it happened but I managed to fall asleep. The next thing I knew, the driver was asking me to wake up from the front seat. My eyes fluttered, my neck hurt from the way I was sleeping, and even when I woke up, my eyes were still fixed to the outside world beyond the glass.

Then I saw it, unchanged, just as it was when I first left it. All white with a dark roof and shutters to contrast it. Giant pillars that stood grand in the front. You’d expect royalty to live in such a place. I don’t understand what made him decide on such a place. It was only ever the two of us in there. Well no that’s a lie. It was me and whatever maid working on that day. No need for all that space. The driver stopped the car in front of the house. I stepped outside and took my bag thanking the driver. He smiled and drove away. I stood there for a moment. I was really going to do this wasn’t I? Would he even be happy to see me? I managed to gather some strength from somewhere because the next thing I knew was that my feet had managed to take me up the steps to the front door. I lifted my hand and bawled it into a fist. I gave the door a light knock. Maybe it was too light since no one seemed to be coming. My hands were trembling so much. I tried to even my breathing and calm myself down as I knocked again. I could hear footsteps getting closer. I couldn’t breathe. My lungs stopped working, my brain turned into putty and my heart completely stopped. I closed my eyes as I heard the lock being turned. I needed to get a hold of myself. I can do this. I opened my eyes and looked at the figure in the doorway. I was surprised by the person that was standing before me. “You are defiantly NOT my father,” I thought.
