Recap of the events of the past hour or so:
My parents are out of town.
I returned home today at 1:00 EST.
When I entered my house, the alarm was not on and several lights were flashing. This is not normal.
Brian went into the house first and made sure that nothing was wrong. (My big strong man.)
After going upstairs and seeing the clocks flashing I realized that the power failure that had apparently occurred since my parents left must have been to blame so I didn't worry too much about it.
We hung out at my house for a bit and then Brian wanted to go to his apartment to get his mail and make sure that everything was in order there, so off we went. I tried to put the alarm on just for the hell of it but nothing happened, so we left. We weren't going to be gone long anyway.
We were gone for about half an hour.
When we arrived back at my house, there was a cop car blocking my driveway and I could see a police man next door talking to my neighbours. Excellent.
They told me that someone had pressed the panic button. I certainly had not pressed the panic button but I explained the situation to them. They came into the house and checked everywhere and didn't find anything to be wrong. They left. (They were two youngish guys and they were very nice.)
After they left, I went next door to tell my neighbours that everything was fine. While I was there, I saw that my aunt had pulled up in front of my house.
I then found out that the alarm company had called my grandparents (they are supposed to call them in case of a problem) and asked if they had a key to my house or if they should break down the door. Let me tell you that my parents had just re-stained our very expensive wooden front doors and likely would not have been happy if it had been broken down. So, my grandparents didn't have a key but my aunt and uncle do so my grandma called my aunt and told her to rush over to my house so that the police don't break down my door. (Luckily, she lives around the corner.)
My aunt left and my neighbour came into the house and helped me reset the alarm so the funny lights stopped flashing and the alarm should be fine now.
I then called my grandma to tell her that everything was fine and not to worry. This is when she told me that the alarm company had called her yesterday saying that they had no contact with the house and asking if everything was okay. My grandma happened to have heard that my area had a power failure and asked if that could cause the problem. It could, she was told. She asked if the alarm needed to be reset or if it would reset itself. It would reset itself, she was told.
*Insert loud noise of buzzer here*
It would seem that it did not reset itself like it was supposed to.
Woo freakin hoo.
The flight home made me feel kinda gross and I was beyond exhausted. All of the brouhaha kinda made me hopped up on adrenaline but that is starting to pass and I would like to stop thinking about it all.
I am going to lie down now.
(Oh, and I had a really great time in Nove Scotia and I may tell you more about the trip at a later date.)
