Only a few days after I wrote about the stray dogs of Delhi, I saw a rather stomach-turning article in the newpaper: Authorities in Srinagar, in the state of Kashmir, are planning to poison 100,000 stray dogs. With strychnine, a nasty and slow-acting (but cheap) poison.
Though India has pretty decent animal welfare laws, there's often no buy-in from local authorities. It's easy to whip up anti-dog sentiment in India. It's easy to whip up anti-anything sentiment in India. And perhaps not only in India...it's surprisingly easy to convince people to target something or somebody.
Even Shakespeare thought so. Remember Cinna the Poet.
