Chapter 2
One by one they drifted into the recreation room. Rip’s dad had pulled out sleeping bad and pillows to create bedding for his unexpected guests. Ethan and Rip sat closest to the windows while Willow sat closest to the door. Xan and Will sat near the fireplace, talking quietly trying to make sense of what they had witnessed.
As soon as everyone was comfortable Mr. Giles’ concerned gaze swept around the room, taking in the expression of the teenagers gathered. Willow was visibly shaking and her lips were compressed in a tight, thin line. Ethan, noticing the direction of the gaze, quickly crossed the room to sweep her up into his arms. He then returned to Rip’s side and they both wrapped their arms around the shaking girl. Xan and Will started and joined in the group hug.
“Don’t worry Wills, everything will be ok,” Xan reassured, speaking softly.
“How?”
“First off I think it would be best for you to tell me what happened,” Mr. Giles interrupted.
Will looked at everyone and nodded. “We were walking past the Park and talking about the movie. This…these things jumped out at us and knocked Xan, Wills and I to the ground. Ethan and Rip helped us to our feet and we took off. I did not get a really good look at the things but I know that they were not human. I know how that sounds,” Will shouted, “but it is true. They were. . .”
“Calm down William,” Mr. Giles interrupted. “I believe you.”
“Dad?”
“Yes Rupert. I know that there are many things in the world that cannot be explained away.” He sighed heavily. “I had hoped that by moving away we would have been able to avoid this complication. However it is now apparent that moving was not the solution.”
He paused to gather his thoughts.
“Dad? What are you talking about? What complication?” Rip asked puzzled.
“He is talking about demons and other things that go bump in the night,” Xan said in a defeated voice. “He is talking about the other side of things. The darker side of our world.”
“Alexander?”
“My dad was a demon. I am part demon.” Xan’s words were barely audible. He slumped as if expecting punishment.
A silence then an explosion of sound.
“What?” “Say that again!” “Why didn’t you tell us?” “How could your hide that?”
“Silence!” Mr Giles’ voice cut through the noise. “Let him speak. Alexander, would you like to explain?”
Sigh. “Not really but I guess I owe you an explaination.”
“No Alexander you do not owe us anything. It is your secret and you can either share it or not. I, for one, will not think any less of you. I assume that your father was a harmess demon that had not intention of taking over the world?”
While Mr. Giles tried to calm Xan the others kept looking at him and trying to discern if he was still the Xan that they knew and loved. Will looked stunned. Rip and Ethan exchanged glances and turned a focused look upon their friend trying to see the demon. Willow pulled away and looked accusingly at Xan as if he had done something morally and unforgivably wrong.
Will gently laid a shaking hand on his best friend’s shoulder. When Xan raised his head and met Will’s eyes, Will clasped him closely and whispered, “You will always be my best friend.”
Ethan and Rip joined in a few moments late echoing Will’s sentiment. Mr. Giles gently patted Xan on the head and murmered his agreement. Only Willow had not joined in, choosing instead to retreat further away from her once friend. Her expression changed from accusation to disgust. The boys pulled back from the embrace to look at her. They could not believe her reaction. Xan was still the same only his family history had. He had not changed, not grown extra parts or acted in rage.
“Willow?” Mr. Giles tried to get her attention. He reached out a cautious hand causing her to pull back further. “Willow?” He tried again to get her attention verbally.
She finally shifted her gaze to the old gent. “It is a lie. He is just saying that to get attention. I is not true. It cannot be true!” Turning to look at Xan once again, she pleaded,” It is not true. Tell me it is not true.”
Unable to look at her, Xan mumbled to his shirt, “I can’t. Wills, I can’t. My dad. . .”
“No! I will not listen to more lies. I will not!” Will stamped her foot and stormed from the room, leaving the rest of them stunned at her outburst.
“I. . .I should leave,” stammered a stunned Xan. He made to get up but was restrained by a gentle hand. He looked down to see three hands on his arm and he looked at three concerned faces.
Will ever the spokes man said, “No we will face this together. She just needs a little while to process and she will be back with tears and cookies.” Everyone laughed seeing the truth in his words. The tense atmosphere disapated somewhat and the boys relaxed. A sound at the door had them tensing again.
Willow stood there, tears falling freely. She flew across the room slamming into Xan’s open arms. “I am sorry. I . . .sorry,” she cried out into his shoulder. All was right again within the group as everyone joined in the hug. Mr. Giles quietly left the room leaving them to their shared emotions.
