It’s been a long day. A long week, really. And it shows every sign of being a long night.
Cuthbert doesn’t dither about whether or not to knock on Susan’s door, this time. And he doesn’t have to, it proves, for the short amount of time before she opens the door and the look in her eyes when she does makes it plain she wasn’t asleep.
Neither of them says anything. Everything they might has been said already.
Talking’s done.
Cuthbert steps through the door, and takes barely a moment to close it before taking Susan’s face in his hands.
The kiss is slow, and thorough, and lingers for a long, long moment. When it finally breaks, they stand there, foreheads touching, his hands framing her face, her hands resting on his shoulders.
Everything they could possibly say passes between them in a moment of silent understanding.
And then her arms slide around his neck, and his go around her waist as he pulls her into another kiss.
Even here and now, the lingering ache of ka-shume doesn’t leave them. But if there’s a chance that this will be their last night together...then there’s all the more reason to make it a memorable one.
