Here's a thing that irritates the crap out of me: Someone wrong-number dials my phone, and when I answer, they, having realized their mistake, just hang up without a word. How rude.
Here's a thing that actually irritates me only very slightly less: When they don't hang up, and say "Oh, I'm sorry! I've got the wrong number!" Much more polite, but unfortunately it forces me to respond.
I've never been accused of being a smooth talker, but this one always catches me particularly flat-footed. Usually, my response is something along the lines of "Oh, uh....sorry...." followed by a chomp on the tongue for being so ridiculous a milquetoast as to actually be apologizing for not being the person they were trying to call.
If I'm in a more laconic mood, I'll go with something like "Aha" or "Whoops," which, while serving the basic purpose of lobbing the social-interaction ball back to the caller, unfortunately makes it clear that I am in fact a tool with no telephone skills whatsoever.
Occasionally, I'll bust out a gem like "Oh, too bad, better luck next time!" but rarely am I in so saucy a mood.
