so while at Job #1 today, i get a call from my coworker at job #2. i dont answer because, well, im working. i check the mxs later and hear something along the lines of this:
"hey, kirsten, if you have time tonight, can you get a pair of steel toed boots/shoes for tomorrow? if you cant, no big deal, but if you can, thats awesome, blah blah blah."
see, in job #2, we are going on a field trip to a clients facility tomorrow. and apparently, we need steel toed shoes/boots. this is, of course, irrelevant of the fact that i had asked on WEDNESDAY if i needed to pick up a pair or not. to which, of course i was told no. i decide that i can work it in my schedule, but have this image of the first pair of steel toeds i had ever seen. they were this pair mom had at her old-old-old job. they were brown leather and kinda looked orthotic.
so, off i go on a mission to find steel toed boots. i thought about updating my Docs collection, but decided that those would prolly fall under the "too 'spensive" range. my company will pay for the boots -- but at a maximum of $80. and that is proooooolly gonna max out the docs. and, since i am unwilling to accept the balance after 80, i need to remain in that range.
as i cruise into the store, waxing thoughts of 'mission impossible', i am amaaaaaazed at the size of the store. they have every kind of work and casual shoe, hiking boots, etc., imaginable. i wander to their work shoes and the thought crosses my mind:
i have no idea what i am looking for. is he a dot? is he a speck? when hes underwater, does he get wet??
i find the nearest lonely employee there. i mustve had this blank look on my face, because he asked if i needed help. i responded that my employer had sent me on a mission to find me some steel toeds. i said that all i saw in his selection were mens shoes. do women wear mens shoes and just convert the size? are there women-specific shoes? and are they cooler than the mens? sleeker? do i HAVE to be a member of the TimmyLeague to buy steel toeds?
he pointed me to the womens section (buried in the deepest darkest corner of the store right before the deeper darker, hidden clearance section). wait. did i say clearance? SCORE! by now hes told me which are the good brands, which are more comfortable, etc. which is really a nonissue since i will be wearing these like, once. ever.
we wander back to clearance and the comedy routine begins.
i point at some (obviously open toe) strappy sandals and ask if they would suffice. he actually started to answer before he realized that i was joking. and DUDE. sketchers makes steel toed shoes. WHO KNEW? and better yet?!?! they had sparkle. and im not talking about the glisten of the steel in the toe. im talking about these shoes looked like TENNIS SHOES. and they had strips of sparkle!!
then i started giggling over that an then told him that i wanted a pair in primary colors, similar to Fischer Price toys. you know, My First Steel Toes. he told me that the kids line of steel toes were on order.
i finally have two pair in my hand: a pair of sketchers (yes, the sparklies; i couldnt resist) and "nautilus" brand. i tried the nautilus on, and quite surprisingly, they were comfortable! yes, comfortable. and then, me, like a helmet head, did what we all do when trying on closed toed shoes... press at the toe to see how much room i have.
i ended up with the nautius. and man, are my steel toes snazzy. they are sneakers! they are a dark blue with neon orange and silver trim.
i feel so hard core. and yet, so girly, all at once.
